When You Know You Obsess Too Much

How do you know when you obsess about fishing too much? Other than that angry look in your sig O’s eyes, maybe it starts like this:

“I’ve been around fish and fishing my whole life, and having caught so many fish, the thrill started wearing off, so I started thinking of ways to bring back the thrill of catching my first big fish again.”

Not bad so far, but that was said by Matt Watson who calls himself an “extreme fisherman” – believe had a TV show at one point called “Extreme Fishing” or something like that.

So this guy, who obviously is short a few Christmas tree lights in his string, decides to  fish for saltwater fish in shark-infested waters from surfboards, jet skis and other craft not designed for fishing.

But he doesn’t stop there.

He decides to jump out of a helicopter and wrestle a live marlin to the surface. A marlin, aka a “billfish” that has a bill specifically designed to hurt things.

Does he do it? Yes (warning: obsessed deer hunters quit reading here):

“We were in Vanuatu filming for our show, and the helicopter pilot was telling us how in New Zealand he used to take guys up to do live deer-catching,” Watson said. [The men would jump from the copter onto the back of deer. Seriously.] “That planted a seed. I thought that would be pretty cool, to catch a big fish in the same sort of vein — jumping out and grabbing hold of it.”

And how does he come up with these wacky ideas? You guessed it:

“Most of the ideas I come up with are born just from hanging around with my buddies having a few beers and throwing some ideas around.”

I don’t know, man. For all we know his friends could be a bunch of teddy bears propped up on lawn chairs in his garage….

Didn’t some other guy do this a few years ago?

Nvm. Same guy. It was a few years ago though. One time I had some perch biting me while swimming. That was pretty scary.
