Today’s Top 3

1. When people in kayaks are cheering you on, you know you’re in a place you’re not supposed to be.

David Walker on fishing skinny water, and getting hung on a boulder, at the AL River.

2. Everyone assumes that if you designed a lure that created such a demand you would be rich or would get rich, but that’s not the reality of it.

– Andy Poss, inventor of the Alabama Rig, prolly the most quickest knocked-off bait/rig in the historee of bassin’.

3. Check out these sick crank paints!

Dwain Batey painted 10 DD2s in this crazy cool molting craw. Wow!

“It’s good to be green” froggie crank, tripped over it while surfin’, love it.

4. Do you have ‘brass largies?

An IA teacher winning a “brass bluegill” award for getting kids fishing got me thinking…because, you know, anything that comes after the word “brass” means…you know.

So anyhow, not sure I’d want “brass bluegills.” “Brass smallies” might even be worse. But “brass largies” – there’s a new bassin’ expression for ya. Thank me when you see me haha!

5. 2-day fish with Z plus $1K cash!

All you have to do is upload a pic of your boat to EagleOne.com/boatshow. How stupidly easy is that?? (Here’s the Faceybook page.)

I’m a-gonna enter too cuz I never get to fish with the dude no mo’ (*sniff*).

> T-H Marine president Jeff Huntley: “We have admired the work of Dennis Clark and O2 Marine team for many years and are proud to be able to add their great products to ours. 5. No baitfish in Scotland?

Asking ‘cuz that 11-lb brown was the first DD fish to be caught out of a “loch” there in 102 years. They think the problem is this:

6. N/A but interesting: ocean birds.

Petrel bones show they’ve had to move down the food chain for prey, evidence of overfishing by people. No surprise but interesting.

Tip of the Day

Ish Monroe: Always Use Go-To/Confidence/Fun Baits

>  “At every lake I fish, I tie on a topwater frog, a squarebill crankbait, a spinnerbait, and a flipping rod with a plastic creature bait. Then I look for the places where I can use them.

> “The spinnerbait is the most versatile, but the squarebill crankbait gives me another option for shallow brush. The frog works over thick vegetation, and with the creature bait I can penetrate any thick cover.

> “These are my favorite lures, and I would rather fish them than anything else. I have enough confidence in them so that when I find the conditions where I can use these lures I know the bass will be there. I also know through experience that on any body of water I will find the right cover and water depth where at least one of these lures will work.

> “I really can’t stress enough how important confidence is in bass fishing,” he says. “So I always tell fishermen to start every day fishing with their favorite lure. If they don’t have that confidence, they aren’t going to catch anything.

> He also noted that all four of his ‘confidence lures’ are fun to fish. And even though he knows a lot more techniques, he doesn’t enjoy fishing them as much.

Quote of the Day

Do you have a lure in your boat that you won’t throw because it just catches too many fish?

– Big Bass Zone writer Mike Jones, asking a rhetorical question to those who don’t like the A-rig. (This may be inspiring me to opine on the whole A-rig thang…mebbe….)

Shot of the Day

One guess what type of skull this is:

Nope, not a gator, it’s a 1-foot long pike skull, 9″ wide, 700 teeth, some an inch long. Pike was about 20 years old and would’ve weighed 50+.
