Today’s Top 3

1. I was catching so many fish that I didn’t know how big they were.

Rick Taylor, Wheeler EverStart winner, on losing track of his weight. Also said:

> No way did I think I was going to win that tournament. I had caught so many big fish that week that I did not know I had big fish. You just get acclimated to it. It’s happened to me on Erie before with smallmouths, but this is the first time I’ve had it on a river system in the south.

Hope that happens to me one day. Btw, he sure looked surprised!

2. Somebody called the state police at 1:30 in the morning and told them there were lights in the lake.

That’s right – IN the lake, in this case meaning a stolen big rig driven straight into PA’s Keystone Lake, a decent bassin’ lake from what I hear.

Looks like a diesel fuel rainbow on the water, can’t be good.

3. A-rig alternative?

Maybe – if you’re into ‘coptering baits and payin’ $13 for a spinnerbait. It’s the Biovex Hyper 7, here’s the nut:

> With seven various-sized willow blades, this bait matches a school of baitfish better than anything of its kind. Despite the larger profile of the Hyper 7 it can be burned through the water just as efficiently as it can be slowrolled. It’s aerodynamic design is sleek and made to cast a mile, perfect for schooling fish.

Anything of it’s kind –  are there other 7-bladed spinnerbaits?? And aerodynamic?? Then again Biovex is a Japanese company so who knows, could work.

News

1. Chris Lane opens Guntersville resort.

A resort…but you stay at a hotel.

2. US EPA also says Susquehanna is fine.

Apparently no one at the EPA or the state DEP fishes:

> Although we share the continuing concerns about the health of the smallmouth bass population, we do not have sufficient data at this time to scientifically support listing the main stem of the Susquehanna as impaired.

> We support the continuing studies being conducted by the Commonwealth to determine both the cause of the declining health of the smallmouth bass population, and to make a determination as to whether or not the main stem of the Susquehanna is impaired.

My question: Did they try to gather any data??? And btw, word is that the head EPA and DEP guys made their decisions on a car ride:

3. B.A.S.S. joins Field of Honor…

…to provide scholarships to kids of soldiers. Very cool.

4. Grass carp found in northern MN.

Only a matter of time before the Lindners have to do a grass carp show hahaha!

5. Gobies decimate smallie bed in 1 minute.

Ever see this vid? The music will make you want to put on a robe and get a pedicure, but the visuals are cool:

Tip of the Day

Ike: Focus hard on the deets.

> You want your bait in the strike zone but you don’t want to waste time pulling it through empty water. If they’re on the shady side of big rock, then get your bait into that spot but don’t fish it all the way back to the boat, and don’t throw it way past the shade of the rock.

> Remember, fish are usually in very specific places for very specific reasons. We might not know what those reasons are but that doesn’t mean they don’t exist.

> Make sure you know exactly what bait you’re fishing with. Do not fall into the trap of thinking that green pumpkin is the same on every lure, or that a fat bait is the same as an “almost fat” bait. Pay attention to subtle differences between your baits. That’s a big part of fishing the moment.

Quote of the Day

If you’re fishing tournaments, you pretty much have to have 5-pound fish to be in the money, and the umbrella rig gives you the best shot at those fish in most lakes most of the time.

– FLW pro Casey Martin on why he has to fish the A-rig….but doesn’t like to:

> I’d just as soon see it banned for all competition, but as long as it’s legal I’m going to throw it.”

> “The reason I don’t like the rig is that it’s murder to cast all day, and it takes some of the interest out of trying to figure out a pattern that you’d be fishing otherwise.”

Shot of the Day

The fishing in MN is great, but the weather…not so much. Here’s a shot from practice for the St. Jude Bass Classic EARLIER THIS MONTH! Conditions: 12″ of snow 48 hours before the start, flooding, and “incredibly cold water.” I don’t know man – some hot wings and a good game, might be a tough call….
