Today’s Top 3

1. Best highlight from PAA derby this weekend:

It was dead slick calm when suddenly brown fish (smallies) came up schooling around him. [FLW pro Wesley] Strader tossed out a topwater bait, the Strike King Sexy Dawg, and caught a 19” smallmouth – he threw right back at them and caught a 21” smallmouth and a 14-1/2” largemouth on a single cast.

Dang! But no camera in the boat??? Or at least no pics posted….

Wes finished 3rd at the Loudon-Tellico, TN derby, behind two other TN guys: Chris Whitson (2nd) and Tommy Brown (1st) pictured here with a couple nice basses:

2. Peter T.’s son fishing EverStarts next year.

Nick T. won the co-angler side at the mid-May Wheeler EverStart, and said: ““I’ll be fishing the EverStarts next year on the pro side. I’m really looking forward to it.”

Lot of potential nicknames here. T2?

3. One night, I was at his house, playing video games, when his dad came in and told Zack he needed to come outside. We went outside, and his dad had rolled up with a Bass Tracker.

NC high school basser tellin’ the story of an awesome dad who has discovered an easy way to get boys off vid games. Feesh!

…to force bass to the banks?

> “In recent years, our planted trout and resident bass have been settling under those shad schools out in the middle of the lake. Anglers have had a tough time catching them. We’re hoping these new hybrids will compete with bass and trout for the shad and force the trout and bass closer to shore so anglers have a better chance at catching them.”

Tip of the Day

Random KVD tips.

Culled from a previously published Twitter chat:

When modifying all cranks lipped and lipless what and how do you do it to make them better?

There’s a lot of modifications, the most important is changing the hooks!

If you find the potential winning area how many times do you revisit it during prefish?

None! I don’t want to get seen in an area like that. I just watch the conditions & take my chances on tournament day.

If you could only have two baits what would they be?

A Strike King Sexy Shad 1.5 crankbait and a green pumpkin jig.

How do you identify off-shore patterns and what is your go to bait for fishing in 40 plus foot of water?

The No. 1 thing for me in finding offshore schools of fish is using side-imaging electronics. In fishing 40 feet or deeper, a jigging spoon and a drop shot rig and my go-to techniques.

When you hook a fish and its bleeding bad what do you do?

I use BassMedics and pour some right on the wound. Then I put some in the livewell, too.

Quote of the Day

Alligators relate just like fish. They are going to be wherever the bait is, and current will dictate where the big alligators roam.

Swamp People TV show’s Troy Broussard talkin‘ ’bout how gators are like basses. Will have to take your word for it, mang! Also said:

> “It’s like finding a big pack of bass, only if you find a pack of alligators, you’re going to find a lot of small ones. You’re not going to have a lot of big gators in the same place.”
