Record stuff today — this is a good Blaster to forward!

1. IGFA says no to record, fisherman ‘loses’ $1 mil.

Looks like you can’t catch a world record on an Alabama/umbrella rig. Remember the story of AR angler Rodney Ply who caught a new world record striper on an umbrella rig…he was trying to catch bass on Bull Shoals.

He’d also signed up for Mustad’s “Hook-a-Million” contest, where you get $100K for a new state record and $1 mil for a new world record. Well, AR flipped him the bird on the state record because of this and that that didn’t amount to enough, and now the IGFA just ruled on the world record:

> The IGFA had never before considered a record catch landed by a lure like Rodney’s…also known as an umbrella rig or Alabama lure.

> But the IGFA had considered large salt-water lures known as spreader bars, and it decided that lures like Rodney’s…when the line is not directly attached to the bait’s snap or other release device…are illegal.

That’s bull! The spreader bar thing is for trolling in saltwater, not casting in freshwater. How can this be made right? My opinions in the link up top. Hope someone steps up.

2. LMB length record?

Tired of chasing after George Perry/Manabu Kurita’s 22-04 largie record? Well, just go after the IGFA world length record. Seriously.

Lure-maker Patrick Sebile recently submitted an entry for the new all-tackle length record largie: 61 cm, which is a little over 24″.

If accepted that will beat the existing 59 cm (23″) record. Seems like the fish has to be released alive.

What a weird record category. Anyhow, fish was caught on a Sebile Proppler Buzz in Okeechobee in May.

3. TPWD website to help anglers find certified scales.

> Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s Angler Recognition Program will launch a new tool this fall to assist Texas anglers in locating certified public scales for weighing record catches. Businesses that agree to participate will be publicized as official weigh stations on the TPWD website.

Just make sure you can catch a TX record on an AL rig….

Chad Morgenthaler on huge jigs shallow.

> His preferred tool is a Lunker Lure Triple Rattleback Monster Grass jig in 3/4-ounce or even 1 ounce.

> “I open the hook up just a little bit, maybe 10 degrees,” he said. “Then I trim the weedguard so that when the jig is standing at a 45 degree angle the weedguard is flat. I also thin it out a few strands.”

> “I always fish it on braided line. In clearer water it still excels, but if the bite gets a little tough I add 4 to 5 feet of 20 lb. fluorocarbon attached with an Albright Knot.”

> He works the jig with quick hops and shakes. A sensitive rod is critical because “if you don’t have a quick hookset they’ll blow it back out.”

> Favorite color: black/blue.

> “If you’re throwing a soft stickbait and catching a lot of 13- to 15-inch fish, what do you have to lose?”
