1. Dudley 24 points above KVD in BassFan rankings!

Never…seen it…before. Not only is KVD 4th in the world – meaning not 1st – he’s a massive 24 points below the current #1, David Dudley. (Brent Chapman is 2nd and Todd Faircloth 3rd.)

As I’ve said here before, I co-designed those rankings. Very complicated, very good. And unless they’ve been tweaked by the current owners of BassFan, they work. So simply put: Dudley has been dominant of late, KVD not so much…which is the odd part.

2. Largies can ‘endanger’ smallies?!

Another new one one me, maybe you too, from here:

> Maine fisheries officials are encouraging anglers to take largemouth bass of all sizes from certain Down East waters.

> Biologists have identified fish caught in Grand Falls Flowage as largemouth bass, indicating the illegal introduction of the species to the area and prompting the effort to eliminate them before they can gain a foothold and endanger the smallmouth bass population already there.

Seriously? Can’t the basses all just get along? (Like they do everywhere else?!)

3. Can you handle fishing with Z?

Hey – I did it for an entire year and I’m still here, so you can handle one trip…. Lol.

Awesome and highly recommended. Now you have a shot at fishing for “slaunches”(still don’t know what those are, but I think basses) in MI in the fall thanks to his sponsor BoatUS.

Z says, “This year is prime for a northern smallmouth beatdown. We’re going to time this trip perfectly – it’ll be Chicago Bears, smashmouth, autumn trophy hunting at it’s finest. We’re gonna knock their lights out. And if we don’t, well, we will still look fantastic!”

Tip of the Day

Rick Clunn on catching the biggest bass.

> An angler must study the lake, the fishermen and the baits most-often used to pinpoint the high-pressure fishing regions. Then you’ll know the target sites where many sportsmen are fishing and the depths of water that most of their baits are covering.

> I’ll look for a segment of water where baits are not being run-through. If most anglers are fishing deep-diving crankbaits or plastic worms, which cover the bottom story of water, and buzzbaits and top-water lures, which run along the surface, I’ll fish a medium-diving crankbait that passes-through the middle story of water. This region is obviously not getting any pressure, so it should be where the big bass are holding.

> One of the reasons why the flipping technique produces so-many big bass is that even though a zone receives a lot of fishing pressure, a big bass can find sanctuary in that same area in the thick cover. A bass may be holding so tight in the cover that the only way to catch the fish is to flip a bait through the densest part of the cover where the bass hasn’t seen any lures.
