KVD’s $434K/yr vs Other Sports

Checked out an article about KVD by Eric Sharp at the Detroit Free Press. Eric’s a good writer, yada yada yada and then this line stood out:

“He has more than $5 million in tournament winnings in 23 years and probably has matched that in sponsorship deals.”

That’s not from the horse’s mouth or scientific, but if we take it at face value:

$5mil / 23 yrs = $434K/yr

Pretty healthy.

BUT bear in mind he’s gotta be the top earner in our beloved sport. Forbes magazine has an annual Top 25 earners in sports. Here are the Top 5 from the 2010 list:

> Tiger “I’m untouchable (not no mo’)” Woods = $125mm
> Floyd Mayweather (boxer) = $65mm
> Kobe Bryant = $48mm
> Phil Mickelson = $46mm
> David Beckham (soccer) = $44mm

Some cricket players even get $1mm+/yr.

Note that these figures are for just one year – which means, to quote KVD from the same article:

“Corporate America is coming back. Fishing is such a great value compared to a lot of other sports. But getting good sponsors for a (tournament angler) really is all about knowing somebody inside the corporations who understands fishing. If you can find somebody like that, somebody who is a fisherman, that’s more than half the battle.”

Absolutely. A great value.

And when you find someone inside, well…that’s why people in Corporate America sponsor stuff like tennis.

I think part of the problem with fishing is there are so few events an Angler gets to fish and only 1 is a premier event (sorry FLW).

I wonder if a model with a few one or two day tournaments thrown in to the season wouldn’t make sense. The anglers need more chances to win with full publicity for the achievement. Maybe the multi-day feature of tournaments needs to be scrapped in favor of making multiple day single day or two day events (one day to quality for a top ?. Imagine a different tournament is fished Mon, Wed, Fri, Sat., either on the same water or different waters that are close together. This would never work with the FLW model, but maybe B.A.S.S. or the P.A.A. could do it.

I think I’d rather have $400k and fish for a living, then a $1mil and play cricket!!

Does the $125 million for Tiger include endorsements? If so, you should factor in KVD’s endorsements which would probably be atleast 500k/ year so you are looking at almost $1 million/yr.

With the amount of time and money it takes to get to the Elite Series, once you get there it shouldn’t be any reason for all 100 of them to be without finiancial concerns. Hope Jerry and the gang can get this thing back on track and moving forward!
