My ol’ buddy Zona is at the top of the Billboard Fishing Show charts, and recently brought Shimano and G. Loomis into his Awesome family. Because neither of us has anything better to do, I asked him the following questions about Loomis’ NRX rods and Shimano’s Core reels.
Serious stuff all the way.
5 Things You Should Never Do With an NRX Rod
5. Lend them to buddies. Trust me, they’ll ask.
4. Compare it to another rod. Impossible.
3. Tell your new girlfriend you like it more than her. Keep that to yourself.
2. Have conversations with it. It communicates through feel, not language.
1. NEVER, EVER go fishing without one!
_____
5 Things a Shimano Core Reel Reminds You Of
5. A majestic wild stallion, untamed. [Easy there Z.]
4. The Guns ‘n Roses album Appetite for Destruction.
3. 1985 Chicago Bears defense.
2. A complete Double Rainbow.
1. PERFECTION.
_____
And for those of us who have no clue what a Double Rainbow is – a sundae? – here it is:

Z, can you lend me a $1000US so I can buy one of those combos? Funny article though…

Here’s an idea for one of Z’s fishing shows:
Z picks the lake and the technique (slow presentation to emphasize sensitivity would work best so maybe drop-shot or tube jig), he fishes with the NRX/Core combo, I’ll fish with a combo that runs no more than $150US, but with identical baits and see who comes out on top.
Probably too racy of a show since I suspect that most companies don’t want anglers to know that there is quality out there that won’t break the bank.

I fish only G-Loomis and Shimano combos, but I must admit that I haven’t tried the NRX or the Core. My set-ups are mostly Saros or Curado on IMX or GLX, and they are amazing. Wish I could try the upgrade though.

You didn’t know what a double rainbow was, Jay? Get with the program, man!
You probably don’t know who Antoine Dodson is either.

I have a glx bcr854. Best pitching/jig rod made imo. I can’t imagine (or afford) what the nrx version is like. Being a builder I wish they sold the blank so the full potential could be brought out of it.

I agree completely. The NRX is built on one impressive blank. Probably the first time since I started building that I was in awe over a factory rod. Those blanks would make a seriously impressive custom build.
Please send me the freebie for proper upgrading 🙂

Leave it to Zona to write an article like this. I love the humor he brings to the bass fishing sport. Still would like to own one of those G. Loomis rods! Just sayin’…

When you have a G Loomis and Shimano combo, you have pure Shimano brilliance.

This would be a nice upgrade over my Shimano Caenan / Cabela’s random 7′ rod someone gave me.

I wish Versus would have picked up his show. (drooling at the thought of owning an nrx)

At least those NRXs have a warranty. There are guys paying even more for Evergreen and Megabass rods shipped from Japan with no warranty coverage.
Me, I’ll stick with my Clarus (unless of course, I happen to win an upgrade).

Did ya notice the colors reversed on the rainbows?

Im sure the NRX rods are awesome, but the price tag not so much! I think I will stick to my GLX’s for now!

Zona always good at telling truth on products. G.Loomis are great rods, have several in collection no NRX yet having to save up for it.

I currently fish with the poor mans version of this mythical combo Z speaks of; Fenwick Elite Tech w/ a Revo SX. While my combo might not be able slay slounch dragons riding double rainbows, it’s still one heck of a combo.

I picked up a NRX the other day and I didn’t want to put it down. Don’t pick one up unless you have the money to buy one because you won’t want to leave the store without it.

HAHA! I love the Z-man! He has a great show! I especially love the comment of the Shimano reel reminding him of the 85 Bears D….what a riot!

The five locations I will catch bass at if I win a rod:
1. A flat
2. Behind a stump.
3. Inside that laydown.
4. A hump.
5. The slop.

Probably never own one unless I win it here. Would love to have one, but I generally set a limit of 100 – 150 per rod.

If I had a whole deck of Core’s strapped to NRX rods I’d be packin’ a whole boat load of expensive gear and totally still fish in the exact same places I do now!

5. Lend them to buddies? Nope! Not even Zona!!
4. Compare it to another rod? Why embarrass them like that…Don’t pick on those less fortunate!
3. Tell your new girlfriend you like it more than her? Who needs a grilfriend if they have a few of these beauties!
2. Have conversations with it. Everyday…as it will likely answer back with a big old bass!!
1. NEVER, EVER go fishing without one! It will complete me!! It had me at hello!!! SHOW ME THE MONEY!!!!!!!
