Today's Top 4

1. How Ike increased his fishing time.

> "I'd rip off a piece of cardboard box and tie up a dozen leaders and use some electrical tape to tape them on there so it saved me a ton of time on the water," he said. "I went from a 5- or 6-minute retie, to a 1-minute retie. I was breaking off a lot…."

> "Over 2 days, I probably saved 30 or 40 minutes. That's a lot of time."

Timing a retie – that's one example of how Elite fishermen are different than the rest of us.

2. No more offsite weigh-ins in TX?

Not a big deal except for big derbies, and this is about zebra mussels:

> The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission approved for public comment new proposed rules requiring that all boats operating on public water in 17 Northeast Texas counties be drained after use.

> No off-site tournament weigh-ins would be allowed if live fish are being transported off a body of water in one of the affected counties.

Okay, but it's inevitable they spread. Already in Ray Roberts, Bridgeport and Lewisville.

3. KVD says BassGold 'super good.'

Kevin was just on my bud Alex Langer's ray-dee-o show, said this about BassGold:

> "That's a really good tool…to give you a good starting point and understand what a system is capable of. It's a super-good tool."

> "It's not magic – it doesn't tell you what to use, where to go – but it gives you a good, general starting point and understanding of what the history on that water body has been."

First of all, BassGold DOES tell you what to use, and more along those lines is in the works. But no prob – thanks Kevin! Had no idea he actually used it…very cool.

4. UK angler DQd for cutting reeds.

Not talkin' 'bout duck calls:

> Before the tournament had begun, owner Neil Dale told entrants that cutting back any vegetation was forbidden. “I made it clear this would not be tolerated and I caught Andy trimming reeds in his swim,” he said. “Every peg is fishable, and anyone caught cheating will have their result from that match wiped off.”

Think that means Andy did something wrong…but of course he disagrees:

> “I was outside when it was announced that cutting swims was banned, and although I admit I tried to do it, I never actually removed anything from my swim,” explained Andy. [Because you were caught!] "I’ve blatantly been robbed of the victory."

SSDD!

Hold on – bait and chumming are allowed, but no harmin' the veggies?? They need to meet David Dudley and his chainsaw….

Tip of the Day

Mark Davis: Finesse TX-rigs.

> “My early finesse-worm fishing was done with a jighead, but you were limited as to where you could fish a worm, as far as being weedless and hanging up. I started finesse-fishing with a Texas rig. It’s absolutely weedless, and you can fish it slow right down into really heavy cover. You can do so much with that you can’t do with a jighead."

> “Right now, the shaky head is more popular than anything else, but it’s completely different. It acts differently, it falls differently, and fish prefer one over the other depending on their mood.”

> “I like to use it in clear water, especially after a cold front or if I’m in an area where the fish are really pressured and I can’t get bites on moving baits or jigs. It’s so important to realize, especially in public waters, if you feel like you’re around fish, you probably are. You just have to figure out how to get them to bite.”

> "A lot of people think that when you break out that little-bitty stuff, you’re fishing for little-bitty bass, but that’s not the case. I’ve caught three 9-pounders in tournaments, and I’ve caught double-digit bass when I was fishing just for fun. You’re just catching fish that wouldn’t bite larger or faster-moving lures.”
