If you’re getting the BassBlaster for the first time it’s because a bud signed you up!

Today’s Top 5

Where to find giant bass.
Here’s a diagram of where tagged DD bass hang out in FL’s Kingsley Lake. It’s a bowl, but:
And #8 ain’t deep either — it’s around a submerged buoy. Who needs fancy electronics??
He’s constantly ragging on me to put down the jerkbait.

Hank Cherry talkin‘ ’bout bud Jacob Powroznik. This jerkbait obsession thing still is an issue for Hank?? What else he said:

> “I owe him a lot for staying on me and making me pick up other stuff like a shakey head in different situations.”

Wait: You’re fishing a jerkbait when you should be fishing a shakey head?? This could be a big deal. Other folks are like:

Hank’s like:
Standing on a trolling motor all day, day after day, is not good for your body.

Aaron Martens talkin‘ ’bout how feesh’n beats folks up, but runnin’ helps:

> It was…the best thing I could’ve ever done for my tournament fishing career.

> Without a doubt, I’m in the best physical shape of my life, and it’s absolutely benefited me in my career. …in 2013 and 2015 — the years I most recently won Angler of the Year — my average finish in tournaments in the second half of the season was 7th. I finished in the top 10 nine times, and my lowest finish was 17th….

> Some of that is maturity, some of it is the fisheries, but a lot of it is my physical conditioning. I can see guys getting worn down the later we get in the season, but I actually feel like I get stronger now as the year progresses.

Guarantee that’s one A-Mart fishing secret almost no one will try to duplicate. But it makes a whale-load of sense. That plus all the Mountain Dew….

If I was an Elite I’d be leaving these in Aaron’s truck because they’re literally impossible to resist:

Mr. Turtle KNOWS, man!
Reptiles have less intelligence than your average ham sammich, but check the expression on this turtle’s face:
He KNOWS, man — he knows he’s bass food. Few thangs:1. How is it that bass can digest turtle and crayfish shells, but soft-plastics not so much? (Though they can pass ’em.) Weird.

2. Makes the Bombshell Turtle look legit but:

3. Dude needs to stop biting his nails.

Posted the Memorial Day thank yous in all the social media, but not here in the email so borrowing Rapala’s because it does make me remember ALL vets and actives:
< width=”576″ cellspacing=”0″ cellpadding=”0″ data-padding-converted=”true”>

THANK YOU from one bassin’ idiot to all those who serve, and the families of those who served, especially families of guys who did not make it back. Bless you all.

Btw that’s a killer color for the new Shadow Rap Shad — I’d buy one, especially if it was a giant wall-hanger version (that’s a hint Rapala peeps!).

Tip of the Day

Shad spawn tips.

Seems like more talk about the shad spawn bite this year than ever before so here you go.

KVD tips:

> Shad spawn shallow on rocky or clay points during low-light periods. Post-spawn bass know that…. You can get some great feeding action for the first hour in the morning or the last hour in the evening….

> On lakes with deeper grasslines, or if the water is colored, the shad will stay in the shallows a little longer. The bass will get tight to areas where they can ambush the shad against the docks, rocks or right up in the dirt.

> The Spit-N-King or a small spinnerbait are good choices for this pattern, but you’ve got to keep the lure in the strike zone for as long as possible and cover a lot of water.

> Although I’m trying to keep the bait in the strike zone longer, I’m still covering water quickly in high potential areas…boat position is critical. If I’m fishing riprap, I’ll fish parallel to the rocks so the lure never leaves the strike zone. If fishing docks, I’m going to zip a lure down one side, shaking and jerking it all the way to the boat, then dart around to the other side and repeat the action before running my electric motor on high to get to the next dock.

> Bass are there to feed, but sometimes it takes a little effort to trick them. You can’t cast a spinnerbait and reel it in. I’m going to shake it, jerk it and twitch it to make it look like an injured shad.

> If the water is clear, I use natural-looking shad imitators in translucent or natural shad patterns for topwaters and jerkbaits, and Sexy Shad for my spinnerbaits.

Alton Jones tips:

> Jones speculates that clusters of male shad are attracted to the flashing [spinnerbait] blade, thinking it is a female shad. “Often you’ll have a ball of shad around your spinnerbait,. Then when the bass comes up behind it, the shad scatter. The bass doesn’t really prefer your spinnerbait to the shad. It just appears to be a more vulnerable target.

> “When the shad quit following your lure, that’s a pretty good sign it’s time to get off the shad spawn pattern and change baits.”

> Jones’ first choice is a 1/2-oz Booyah spinnerbait with a willowleaf blade. “I’m always throwing a white skirt because a shad is the only thing I’m trying to imitate. I don’t need to add chartreuse or anything else. The underside of a shad is white, and the bass is looking up.”

> His second choice is a Bomber Fat Free Shad…in pearl white.

Guido Hibdon…

…a Jedi Master of bassin’ who absolutely would know about this stuff:

> Guido Hibdon secures a Fluke tail on his spinnerbait after cutting 1 to 2 inches off the [Fluke]…. The bait is particularly effective when bass are chasing larger gizzard shad.

> “I want 2 inches of the tail sticking out past the skirt. The larger lure eliminates a lot of bites, but those you get will be the right bites. As soon as you get a limit, tie on one of these. It will definitely get you a bigger fish.”

Other bait recommendations (from here and here):
> …a Heddon Super Spook Jr. in shad patterns [check these Buckeye Lures custom-painted ones]…. During midday, a Flash Mob Jr….fished in the deeper water near a spawning site is a good choice.
> …shallow-running crankbait like the Norman Mad N. Burn the bait past likely areas and don’t hesitate to bump hard surfaces to trigger reaction bites.
Definitely don’t forget about the smaller umbrella rigs.

Quote of the Day

Most folks who come to Mille Lacs are getting their personal best.

– Huge statement by a local guide talkin‘ ’bout 6- and 7-lb smallies. More:

> “They grow slowly, but they grow big. Mille Lacs has an abundance of crayfish, and that’s all they eat. They’re tearing up the crayfish.

> “They’re not longer, but they get heavier. They grow in every direction. They grow tall. They grow wide, side to side.”

Elites are gonna weigh some SACKS up there yo! Maybe I’ll go and, you know, fish some spots the guys happen to vacate. That means you Ike! lol
