Today’s Top 5

May be ramping back up to daily soon. A lot to jam into every other day….

1. Warmwater discharges…are bad?

Counterintuitive results from a recent study:

> Largemouth bass were found in highest numbers (70 fish/hr) farthest away from thermally impacted sites….

> During both fall and spring, sites farthest away from the warm water dishcharge area had the highest catch rates for bass.

> Catch rates of bass were found to decrease linearly with increasing water temperatures, regardless of season.

Hmm.

2. Is this the next “best weedless jig?”

Here’s a shot of a prototype designed by Mark Pack. Word is it’s patented and “almost impossible to snag and the hook gets serious hookups. The weedguard is the unique part and DOES NOT in any way affect the hookups at all.”

3. I was standing on the shoulders of giants.

Cliff Pace talking about his Classic win and being thankful for those who have come before. Cool.

4. The cold and the drop in water temperature caused me to wonder why any fish would want to bite.

Chris Lane talking about his day 1 zero at the Classic.

5. Find bait secrets at…fillet stations?

> It was at Amistad Lake where Larry Scruggs, a former guide, taught me how to extract secrets from a bucket full of bass intestines.

> During an outing on Amistad a few years ago, Scruggs and I visited a few filet stations, one at Box Canyon and another near the Rough Creek Marina. Upon investigation, he immediately proclaimed that our lure of choice that day would be soft plastic crawfish and reddish colored rattletraps.

> “The fish are hanging around shoreline rocks and picking off resident crawfish,” he said. He was correct as we caught bass that entire day by casting near rock banks and allowing plastic crawfish lures to slip into deeper water. We fished windy points with crawfish colored rattletraps and experienced similar results.

News: OC/IMO/Kroenke Saga

What Outdoor Channel decides to do – marry up with initial suitor Intermedia Outdoors (owner of BassFan.com among others) or late-coming suitor bilyun-aire sports mogul Stan Kroenke (part owner of World Fishing Network among others) – should be decided soon.

The media is reporting that IMO has a few days to come up with an offer that tops Kroenke’s, something it might find tough to do…and Kroenke has deep enough pockets to fire back. We’ll see what happens. Few tidbits:

> Looks like at least some OC shareholders didn’t like the IMO deal in the first place: “[OC] shareholders…should not be forced to take shares in the resulting new company, an entity that will be saddled with significant long-term debt, have little available cash on hand and carry an exposure to a struggling publishing unit.” Apparently Kroenke’s bid doesn’t carry such baggage.

> This guy thinks all three companies should throw in together, something that actually could make a lot of sense but…good luck with that.

> If you’re a conspiracy nut, a right-wing media outlet reported that one Intermedia partner, Leo Hindery Jr., is a huge Obama guy who is bent on acquiring and shutting down all the gun-related media he can get his hands on. Highly doubt that’s the case, since these-type dudes are about coin first and foremost, but I guess you never know.

Tip of the Day

Mark Menendez: Jerkbait tips.

Few good’uns:

> Two things position bass while feeding in frigid water: wind and current. Current will always take precedence to wind. Wind will be the factor if there is no current. The bass will be facing into these.

> Bass in cold water are sight-feeders. You need to have water clarity a minimum of 18-24″ for this technique. Additional water clarity will magnify the productivity of a jerkbait.

> This tactic demands high-quality hooks. The bass will be coming to strike the lure from long distances, and a round-point, chemically sharpened hook will grab the bass that are slashing at the bait.

> As the fish is fought closer to the boat, the angler may be able to roll the rod tip and reverse the direction of the hooked bass. This will allow other hooks of the bait to penetrate the bass.

Quote of the Day

These products are often designed by humans who don’t know enough about what fish hear.

A biologist talking to the NY Times about rattling baits.

But sound underwater = vibration, so…scientific humans don’t know enough about what fish bite…. Doh!

Shot of the Day

240-lb limit!

Yep, slimeball catfish, but hilarious and kinda cool at the same time.

> Last weekend, the Cabela’s King Kat Tournament Trail hit the waters of Lake Tawakoni, TX. This was the highest weight brought to the scales since Cabela’s King Kat lowered the amount of fish to a five-fish limit.

> Three teams brought in a five-fish limit exceeding 200 pounds including the winners of the event with 239.8 pounds. This broke the record set by Dale Kerns and his son at Henderson, Kentucky in 2011 when they weighed in 212 pound with a five-fish limit.
