Two Cali Trails Ban AL Rig Becuz…

Can’t believe how many stories I’m seeing, hearing about the Alabama Rig. The way people are talking, maybe it makes sense that B.A.S.S. banned it from the Elites. Sounds like the whole country could be one big Alabama Rig trail.

Probably not, but that’s the amount o’ buzz.

But the Elites aren’t alone in their desire to just say no to the rig. According to a recent article, two California trails are banning it. WON Bass is allowing it, but Angler’s Choice and National Bass West apparently aren’t.

Why? Fear of cheating.

Hmm. That one made me think. But a little further in the article it says this – reading it, bear in mind that Cali law says no more than 3 hooks per rig:

“There is so much controversy around the lure and accusations of fishermen using more than three hooks that Mike and I probably will ban them in our tournaments,” Peterson said [Lynne Peterson of National Bass West]. “When people fish for money, we’ve learned that some will do anything for a check. We believe it should be one rod, one bait, one fish.”

But then that brings up a key point involving all rules. To quote yet another A-Rig article:

“If weekend tournaments ban the lure, how will promoters enforce the rule if they don’t give polygraph tests?”

Hot!

How hot is the rig? Well, if the number and speed of the knockoffs is any indication, crazy hot. An Okie tackle store owner said this (here): “We’re selling them as fast as we can get them in.”

And for some perspective: “This bait is as big as the Slug-Go was.”

One Rod, One Bait…

That line “one rod, one bait, one fish” reminded me of this blues tune. Maybe I (or someone else out there) should do a bassin’-themed remake of this song about the Alabamian Rig….

Their reasoning makes no sense. What if I use a jig as my drop-shot weight? They should ban the drop-shot “just in case”. Or, a jig for my C-rig weight? Ban it “just in case. Don’t forget my double-fluke rig, my double topwater rig (predator/prey set up)… Not much left to throw once they get around to banning all other potential multi-bait rigs.

I like that certain groups are banning the A-rig for multiple reasons. I like that organizations are taking a stance and forcing tough competition. I like that it creates a lot of dialogue and diatribes for us fishing junkies to read and weigh in on. Having fished this rig and become seduced by its magic…I love fishing it. I just disagree with banning it just because it could lead to cheating. As several have pointed out here, that is a sorry reason because if people want to cheat, they will cheat anyway.

Exactly Rich! I wish that the Cali tours had the guts to just come out with the true reason they banned it, since it is obvious that likelihood of cheating is a false argument. At least BASS came out with the real reason, “because some very vocal anglers complained about it” even though they worded it nicer. That is the REAL reason.
