1. Fish dying – too hot?
Tough to tell whether the heat is a direct or indirect cause, but here’s some highlights from various news articles:
> Hundreds of northern pike have died in southern Wisconsin waters over the last several days, apparently due to heat stress. The northern pike were adult fish ranging from 22 to 40 inches in length.
> The DNR reported surface water temperatures of as high as 91.5 degrees last Friday in the Winnebago system. The temperature 3 feet below the surface was 88 degrees.
> Knoxville, TN officials say that the record heat depleted the water’s oxygen levels and killed 10,000 small bluegills.
> The Delaware Department of Natural Resources says 5,000 to 6,000 gizzard shad, 600 adult white perch, a few adult blue gills and largemouth bass are dead.
> About 200 dead fish were discovered in Dallas’ Turtle Creek. Thousands of dead fish turned up at Dexter City Lake in Missouri.
2. TN has done all it can do for basses?
> “Overall, we don’t have a whole lot [of regulating] left we want to do,” said Bobby Wilson, TWRA’s chief of fisheries. “As far as creel limits and size limits we’re probably not going to be doing anything drastic.”
> It took about a quarter century to get there. About the time Wilson started working for TWRA 32 years ago bass fishing in Tennessee had started to slip. A lot of fishermen realized it, but they didn’t want to talk about it.
> Statewide, Tennessee officially has no size limit on smallmouth, largemouth or spotted bass, but most lakes do. “Protect the bass,” Wilson said of the differing size and creel limits across the state. “We feel like we have done that with the regulations that we have in place.
> “We still get complaints…but we’re not getting a lot of complaints. That tells me that we’ve done a pretty good job with things.”

3. Legit smallie bassquatch.
That’s a “legit 7-lber” from Dave Mercer’s Facebook page. Yuge! Here’s what he said about it:
As promised here is a picture of J.P’s Lake Simcoe Bass-Squatch from yesterday. This dude was 22 inches and a legit 7-lber! The crazy thing is this was one of the first fish of the day. This freaky fish made all the 4s and 5s we caught the rest of the day seem small.
Two things:
1. Bassquatch is my new favorite word.
2. He caught that fish and many others on, you guessed it, the Strike King Dream Shot, winning bait of the Green Bathtub Elite.

Tip of the Day
> Sometimes the plastic is too tough and the bass can’t press the rubber down. If I get a frog like that, I soften it by placing the bait in a pan of water on the stove and heating it for a time. Be careful not to boil the frog….
> Susquehanna River guide Jerry Sersen believes in opening the gap between the hook point and the plastic body. He uses pliers and pries the hook near the bend so that it unlocks space between the body and the point.
> First he says the gap should fit a dime between the point and the body. Later, he says it’s more like the width of a quarter. You get the idea: there needs to be a gap.
