Today’s Top 3

1. What’s interesting about West Point.

Not the fish…but check these:

> 2 Wester Coasters finished 1st and 2nd (Skeeter, A-Mart), and another (Zaldain) finished 6th.

> Faircloth finished 6th. He’s fishing VERY strong.

> Clunn finished 9th. Didn’t someone here say something about how Clunn’s still one to watch when the fishing’s tough….

> BassGold was right again. Just sayin’….

Here’s the most interesting thing I read about the tournament, from Bassin’Fan’s day 2 coverage:

> Hank Cherry would be knocking on the door of the Top 5 if not for a brain cramp today that caused him to throw back a keeper that he never intended to cull. The fish, which still had Cherry’s culling tag clipped to its lip….

In was either save the fish or the tin of chew, man!  (Kidding.)

And in case you’re not familiar with this side of Skeet, check out how 100% all biz he is getting this fish in the boat:

2. What up wif Pickwick??

Pickwick EverStart this weekend, local winner Randy Haynes catches 33-01 THE FIRST DAY, won with 79-11 over 3 days. Pickwick?? I remember when that lake was like fishing Death Valley, man!

And guess what won another derby…the Strike 6XD and 10XD (sexy shad and citrus shad) – river ledges and humps in 15-20′.

Worth noting is Haynes used a Kistler Mark Rose signature crankin’ rod, and Rose finished 5th also cranking the XDs. Here’s the 10XD in citrus:

3. Jerry’s influence on the Ztrain.

Many times Z has mentioned the influence Jerry McKinnis has had on him. I just don’t see it. You?

News

1. Every Elite stop attracts 9-10K people.

Wow, that’s crazy impressive.

2. CA: Bass Lake about full again.

After drawdown, fishing’s going crazy.

3. OK: Man catches 2.5-lb goldy when crappie-fishing.

On Grand Lake, ate a minnow. Now you can tell your kids that when you flush goldy, he really does go to a better place!

Tip of the Day

How KVD chooses crank colors.

Highlights from a great piece on the Bass Zone:

> Orange/Red Craw patterns – I throw the craw patterns in the earliest part of spring, no matter what the water clarity is.

> Chartreuse/Black Back – My top choice for dirty water all year long. Also a top pick during the spawn when the water is heavily stained. I also use this color in post-spawn conditions in off-colored water that is stained or dirty to the point that you can’t see the lure more than 12-18” below the surface.

> Bluegill – My favorite color around the spawn as long as the water is clear to the point you can see the lure at least 18-24” beneath the surface.

> Sexy Shad – The best color when the water has a pretty heavy or darker green tint to it, to the point of being stained, and the shad are the predominant forage. Sexy Shad is awfully good in a lot of situations, but I only choose it about 30% of the time.

> Summer Sexy Shad – This is a subtle version of sexy shad that I use largely during the warmest time of the year…when the water is pretty clear…and shad are present.

> Green Gizzard Shad – This is a little better choice than plain ol’ Sexy Shad if the water is really, really clear and there are plenty of shad.

Quote of the Day

Two good’uns from the West Point Elite dead sea derby:

I don’t think a shock boat could catch a limit of fish where I was today.

– Dennis Tietje possibly wishing he was at G-ville.

You have to grind it out and keep your head straight in conditions like this.

– Ricky Clunn sharing far more wisdom than it might seem.
