MLF: I Think I Could Win!

I'm weighing it!

It’s said that every fisherman/gal goes through three stages:

1. Catch any fish.
2. Catch lots of fish.
3. Go after only the biggest fish.

Apparently I haven’t evolved fully as a fisherman much because I’m stuck at #2 most of the time. I like to catch ’em.

Yes I’ll go after bigger ones – bigg-er. Rarely do I ever fish for the biggest fish. Maybe never. Honestly I just want to go out there and feel the tug, if you know what I’m saying. Couple-3 pounds is good, I’m stoked with a 4 or 5. Caught a 9.5 once, a huge fish but didn’t fight near as hard as a smaller one.

Okay, Jay, shut up and move on. Here’s the connection: I’m reading an interview with Marty Stone about the new Major League Fishing thing, and this catches my eye:

There will be no weigh-ins, as water marshals will weigh catches on the spot and track landings with a real-time leaderboard available to viewers and competitors. The winner will be determined not by the usual best five fish, but by his cumulative total weight. “The last day of our tournament could see a hundred fish for a winning weight of 400 pounds,” Stone said.

Cumulative total weight? I’m…flabbergasted (anyone still use that word?). Unless I’m reading that wrong, sounds a lot like a “most fish” tournament. And folks, that’s #2. That’s me.

No going after five big bites? Seriously? That’s me.

Gimme my swimming jig, curly-tail grub on a jighead or good ol’ plastic worm and I’m going to beat someone. Maybe even win.

You?

And what’s your go-to many-fish bait?

(More comments on that article later in the week….)

A 3″ grub (most likely smoke colour) on a 1/8 oz darter head jig. Everything bites it, even non-bass.

Interesting format. I can picture the strategy dilemma for bed fishing tournaments: Do I try to catch that aggressive male again (three times?) or spend more time trying to catch the bigger female?

At GEM Fishing camp here in MN, sometimes they/we do tournaments by total length with no limit. Many times these are multi-species tournaments where everything you catch counts. I was edged out one time by another boat catching dozens and dozens of little sunfish vs. my boats pike and bass.

I think the fact that there is no getting away from a hot bite to have to cull is a nice thing.
