Today’s Top 5

1. Super-Nova ‘Traps only at Dick’s.

‘Tis the season and now there are 10 more crazy colors of Rat-L-Traps, but only at Dick’s. The official word:

> “We’ve added the most luminous inserts available to produce fish attracting light-waves that when combined with the Liv-N-Sound qualities of the legendary Rat-L-Trap make for an overwhelming predatory response.”

Are you…you know…attracted to those baits?

2. PAA allows A-rigs and strolling.

Is this a big deal? Nah. But it does hint at what the rules should/could be elsewhere.

> A-rigs: “…those that were against it would they say they were against it, but they’d follow that up with, ‘I can’t catch any fish on it anyway.’ That really seemed to be a big reason.

> Strolling/long-lining: “I felt we had to spell it out exactly how the technique had to be performed. In a way, we’re protecting the fishermen because you have to allow them to fish with a clear conscience….”

> Here’s the PAA strolling rule: Can be used provided all of the criteria below are met:

1. A cast must be made.

2. Wind, current and/or trolling motor are the only means by which an angler can propel the boat during and throughout the process. The combustible engine cannot be used to advance the boat.

3. The angler’s reel must continuously be in “free spool” at all times when the boat is being propelled by the trolling motor.

4. The angler cannot intentionally advance the lure throughout the process while propelling the boat with the trolling motor.

5. The point at which the reel is first engaged, the lure must be retrieved completely to the boat before placing the reel in free-spool again.

6. Once the reel is engaged and the retrieve is in progress, the trolling motor cannot be used to move, advance and/or position the boat.

What if a guy has an evil thumb? Is it his fault? Happens….

3. Two big TX catches.

No other state has so many DD bass caught each spring. 2 more:

Lake AG Carter ShareLunker, 13.75 lbs, 26.5″ long, 21″ around, 7″ Power Worm in a cove in 3′.

New Lake Bonham record, 12.77 lbs, 23.5″ long, 24.5″ girth, deep-diving crank.

4. Ever hear of the Crunch Minnow?

Was reading about a Lake San Antonio, CA derby won with several baits including a prototype Crunch Minnow. Never heard of it, but here, according to the trademark application, is what it looks like:

Article says:

> Scott Garman, a Morro Bay lure innovator, expects to have his Crunch Minnow on the market by June. Meanwhile, he’s working on perfecting his latest invention, a frog lure that is unlike anything currently available.

5. Uh…wow?

Had to include this. No doubt the most dramatic (melodramatic?) vid, show, whatever about ice fishing. My fave part is when the guy loses a fish and throws his tiny rod down. Hey now fella – ice fishing is all about glow-in-the-dark grubs, chicken wings and adult beverages….

Gotta hand it to the production company. Next show they should do is on raking leaves or maybe growing grass. Or how ’bout people seating themselves in movie theaters.

1. Elite: Falcon bass cooperating…

…but not for everyone. Two Elites zeroed, then again 3 limits over 30 and another 42 (!!) over 20. The biggest feesh was a mere 9-11, weighed by Rick Morris. But lots of guys lost big’uns.

Here’s Rick’s fish. Most of them look that way – lean and mean. Not a lotta toads yet.

2. Sneak preview of Loomis GLX Jig and Worm rods.

From the Ultimate Sport Show at Devos Place, Grand Rapids, MI. GLX JWR a must-have!

3. BassGold: Top 25 Bassmaster Classic patterns in.

Wrote up the Top 25 patterns for the Grand Lake Classic for Bassmaster.com a couple weeks back, they are now part of the BassGold database. Good thing about that was before that we had found just 1 February pattern for Grand. Now the database has 26!

Tip of the Day

MegaStrike’s Uhrig: Diving with bass.

If you spent 10% as much time under the water as you do on it, think you’d learn a thing or two about the basses? MegaStrike president Bobby Uhrig has done exactly that. A few tidbits from his post on it:

Hart_Mike_leadweights_370_WON

> We also noticed that the bass congregated around objects in weedbeds – for example, stumps, rocks, rockpiles, boulders, brushpiles, laydowns. At the time we called them “bass magnets.”

> Before I dove with bass, here’s what I would do when I’d find one of these bass magnets, whether I was fishing for fun or in a tournament: When I’d catch a fish, I’d immediately try to establish a pattern. In other words, if I caught one on a stump, I would quickly go find another stump to try to duplicate my success.

> But what I noticed when diving was these bass magnets would usually have multiple bass. For example, brushpiles or laydowns would have not one, not even five, but at times 25 bass!

> What I do now, after diving with bass, is if I catch one bass on or near a certain magnet, I fish it thoroughly – using different approaches and techniques, as well as different lures. If I catch one with a jig, I will switch up and throw a tube, then a worm or any other bait I think they will hit.

These fish are so big and so hot….

Ish Monroe talking about Falcon’s bass…I think. Skeet said in the same article:
