Ever Tourney-Fished With a Bobber?

Somehow I’m on this walleye site reading an article and come across this:

Dave shared an interesting walleye tactic that has won him some big bucks along the way. He calls it “Power Bobbering.” Dave credits more than $100,000 in cash over the years, and a 1st-place finish in the Wave Wacker Milles Lacs tournament to Power Bobbering.

He runs his Warrior [boat] at 2.5-3 mph over the Mille Lacs gravel flats. He selects areas not being fished by other anglers, and zigs and zags watching his Lowrance electronics. He knows what the right-size slot fish look like and searches for them.

He holds a slip-bobber rod in hand with hook baited. So does his partner. When the perfect-size image shows up…he throws his bobber right behind the boat and hits reverse to slow the boat’s momentum. Dave said, “This may look odd, but we usually boat 30 to 40 slots each day, often hooking up doubles.”

Other than the use of actual bait in the toothy-fish derbies, this sounds like the float ‘n’ fly tactic. Anyone used that or another walleye/crappie/other bobber-esque tactic in a derby? How?

Somebody won a Lake of the Ozarks tournament with a bobber and tube bait. It was either early winter or spring.

I fished with a guy at a Divisional who used a wacky rig on a bobber. He lost a huge fish on it. Supposedly he used it a lot back home.

I’ve used the bobber/wacky rig too. If you need that bait to not go below a certain depth it works great!

FLW had a february tourney on lake travis a few years back, and the winning patter was the float and fly I believe.
