Today's Top 5

1. Ott gets Caribbean on 'em.

Ott DeFoe sledgehammered t'other folks fishin' this weekend's Douglas Open, aka fifth FLW Tour derby (about a zillion FLWers in this'n). Won by nearly 10 lbs! Main bait was this-a-here:

'Tiz a Rapala DT-16 in Caribbean Shad, aka chartreuse-ish blue back which if you haven't been payin' attention is workin' all over the country right about now. That's another Ike Custom Ink color, btw, which the guys seem to prefer.

Also be usin' a Terminator football jig.

2. 'Nother couple "Ott-ball" things.

Not sure if Ott wuz tryin' to look like the invisible man or the mummy or what, but he's dressin' like this…except for his feet, which I guess are okay cuz they're farther from the sun??

More Elite plaid!

3. Strike King 10XD wins again!

Dang it folks, if'n you ain't crankin' a XD or DT you one fry short of a Happy Meal. This'n time fishin' deep on Kentucky Lake at a Ray-o-Start:

> …the key to the strategy was rotating through them in careful order. He started with a Strike King 10XD crankbait, then followed that up with a prototype Profound Outdoors Z-Boss 20 crankbait…. The subdued action helped him catch fish “behind” the 10XD. Once the crankbait action slowed, he followed up with a swimbait and a jig.

4. KY Lake = bass factory.

Kentucky Lake is fished HARD. Yeah, lots o' lakes are, but not sure how many can support that level of national, regional, local derbies plus just plain fishin' and STILL put up weights like at tthat Ray-o-Start: the top 4 had over 70 lbs (15 fish) and the top 8 had over 65 lbs.

Bass there remind me of these guys, the Giants' offensive line:

5. Mike long admits record fib?

Or just photo fib? Or…?

> Upon recent public scrutiny, including photos that surfaced a few years ago of another angler holding the same bass in the same boat, Long now admits that the bass in the photo was not caught by him. The angler who caught the fish, a former friend of his, has said the fish in the photo was 16 pounds, which would have fallen just short of the lake [Poway] record at the time, 16 pounds 4 ounces.

> "For the record many years ago I caught a 18 at Lake Poway and my 35mm film did not capture the bass, and Bill Rice who was the editor at Western Outdoors wanted a picture and I sent him one of me holding my friends bass, and yes that was wrong," Long said….

So, all you have to do in Cali is SAY you caught a record??

> The plan would limit anglers to keep no more than five largemouth bass per day, and only one of those five could be 16-inches or longer.

2. TX: Alligator gar hurting Falcon bass?

What about manatees?

3. MT: Western Divisional = $250K…

…to local economy.

4. Gerald Sensabaugh bassin'.

Yep, covered that already, but B.A.S.S. just did a story on it.

5. New FLW marketing dude.

Tip of the Day

Randy Howell: Fishin' boat ramps.

> “When folks use their big motors to power-load their boats onto their trailers, small holes and mounds are created right in front of the ramp. When the ramps aren’t in use, big bass will relate to these depressions and humps throughout the day.”

> “It’s no secret that bass love areas with a hard bottom composition…to make it easier to load and unload boats, the gravel and cement extends into the water several feet – much more than you’d think. In a fishery void of suitable hard bottom, even the smallest ramps can hold surprisingly large concentrations of bass.”

> “After a few years of use, ramps will start to get little cracks and holes in them. This creates a perfect environment for substantial populations of crawfish, which are an excellent protein source for big bass.”

> Due to the rocks, concrete chunks and other obstructions often found near boat ramps, Howell urges the importance of a squarebill or coffin bill crankbait. It’s very important to beat the crankbait against any available cover and these bill styles aid in optimum deflection to reduce hangups.

> If he fails to get a crankbait bite within roughly a dozen casts, Howell isn’t too quick to give up and move on. He’ll spend a few more minutes utilizing his “cleanup” baits [shakey head and jig].

Quote of the Day

It's not any fun to suck.

Boyd Duckett talkin' 'bout the state of his fishin' lately – among doing like 5 other things too.

> "If I can't make the commitment to be a Top-30 guy, win a tournament every so often and make a few Top 12s, then I'll just stay here at Guntersville and catch them whenever I want to."

> "I think maybe what I need to do is fall back to obtainable goals – for instance, making a 50-cut. If I can just do what it takes to accomplish that, I could get my confidence back up and start moving in the right direction."
