1. Great community hole article…
…on Bassmaster.com. Covers the Fort Gibson Central Open happening right now (Kevin Short leading with 16-11) but applicable elsewhere. Highlights:
> Community holes are most popular on flood-control reservoirs. Anglers sink brushpiles and other manmade habitat at strategic locations. Most holes are located near channels, where the structures create ambush points and current breaks attractive to the bass.
> Virtually anywhere that Tommy Biffle has won a tournament [on Fort Gibson] – and there have been many – is a community hole.
> At Fort Gibson he’s fished a productive spot only to have local anglers converge there upon his departure. “They get hammered and the fish get really spooky,†he said.
> “I’ve found the same artificial habitat is used to make [community holes],” Short said. “So what I do is look for what makes up the community holes on a given lake. And then go look for something completely different.”
> Short determines the baseline depth of the artificial habitat. Then he fishes shallower or deeper to find that something different. “Something different can be areas that hold bigger shad, or a different kind of rock.”

Jason Christie flip tips.
A few basic-type tips from the current FLW champ:
> “I pick the lure and weight by the water clarity. The clearer the water, the faster I want the lure to fall.â€
> In clear water, like Beaver Lake and Table Rock, he wants a fast-falling lure anytime the water temperature is more than 70 degrees. When water temperature gets very cold, however, he’ll begin considering a slower-sinking jig….
> Lure selection depends on the time of the year. Usually Christie uses a heavy Booyah jig with a soft-plastic crawfish trailer, or…a Texas-rigged Yum Wooly Bug [in] black/blue or green pumpkin.
> Christie warns anglers considering sink-rate to think about more than just the weight of the jig or sinker. A bulky trailer like a 4.5″ Yum F2 Mighty Bug is going to fall a lot slower than the 3.25″ Wooly Bug. The number of appendages or shape (flat vs round) will also make a difference in the sink rate.
> “I like to use fluorocarbon fishing line when flipping…that’s what I use almost always, regardless of technique.”
