Today’s Top 3

1. New rules were implemented…with conservation in mind, including penalties assessed for fish hitting the carpet of the boat. Contestants are also required to release the fish beneath the gunwale.

New rules for Major League Fishing, the made-for-TV, pro-co-owned tourney series. Here are the MLFers. A little tough to tell from a small shot like this, but they al look kinda…similar.

2. Gerald is one of ‘em, and he’d do the same for me if I ever needed him to return the favor.

Shaw Grigsby talking about Gerald Swindle and giving him some baits. That’s a heck of an endorsement coming from Shaw, one of the best dudes ever.

3. Ten percent of any prizes I might win would be donated to them.

Elite Series ROY Brandon Card talking about donating to his former college team at the University of Kentucky any potential winnings if he gets voted into the All-Star event.  Cool. Vote for him and other pros (you can vote for four a day) here.

> Umbrella rigs often include more than three lures. If the change is approved, only three of the lures in a rig could have hooks on them. “If only three of the lures had hooks on them, the rig would still be very effective,” says Drew Cushing, warm water sport fisheries coordinator.

Tip of the Day

Zell Rowland topwater tips.

Great stuff from an acknowledged master topwater fisherman. Highlights below, but article definitely worth a full read:

> “It’s my job as a professional fisherman to know every bait, and there’s not one we’ve made that I haven’t had the hooks off. I put larger hooks on, smaller hooks on, I’ll fish it on four or five line sizes to see how that affects the action.”

> “The lighter the line you use on any bait, the better action you get. The moment you go two line sizes up, say from 10-pound to 14, the action difference is phenomenal.  People say that with topwater baits line size doesn’t matter, but that’s not true.  The lighter the line, the more movement I get out of the bait, and only a fish is going to tell me if it wants a Spook turning 90-degrees or if it wants the bait turning 30-degrees.”

>  “I like a feather on the back treble of all my topwater baits. When a fish boils on a topwater and misses, a lot of times I’ll kill the bait, because I know where that bass is. Now the bait is sitting there dead in the water, and if I just touch the reel handle the bait doesn’t move, but those feathers flare out and move like a something that’s been wounded and is just barely quivering on the water. Nine times out of 10 I’ll get that bass to hit again because of those feathers.”

Quote of the Day

I always said I wasn’t going to let that happen to me again…to not catch a limit and that’s what’s going to haunt me here now.
