1. Christie now 2 for 4 in 2012: Wow!

Let’s recap:

> Jason Christie qualifies for the Classic by winning the Detroit River Northern Open in July.

> Then he goes out and wins this weekend’s Central Open on Fort Gibson rez in Okie-ville.

That’s pretty durn awesome on its own, but how ’bout this factoid: Jason’s fished a total of eight B.A.S.S. tournaments. Four this year. So he’s won 25% of the B.A.S.S. events he’s fished, and an amazing half the B.A.S.S. events this year. Dang!

How he won this one – and btw, this is how pattern info appears in BassGold.com, though even more condensed so you can read it fast:

> Fished flats in the Whitehorn Cove area, isolated rocks, logs, anything that might hold bass.

> Fish were in 2′ or less. “I knew a lot of guys would be looking deeper,” he said, “but deep water bass just aren’t as reliable for me. You catch ‘em today, and they’re gone tomorrow.”

> “I’m an old-school bass fisherman,” he said. “I don’t carry a lot of different baits in my boat. This week I used three baits to catch all my bass: an old Rebel Wee-R crankbait, a Heddon One Knocker Spook and a Yum Wooly Bug.” (Pics of baits below, no word on colors yet.)

> The Wee-R isn’t made anymore, but has a squarebill and Christie said: “I like it because I can crank it as fast as I want and it won’t roll over on me.”

> Key was Power-Poles to hold his boat in stiff winds so he could focus on fishing.

2. TN considering AL rig regs.

For 2013, comments accepted through Oct. 15:

> The proposal, if approved, would limit anglers to three hooks, single or treble, per rod. The array could still consist of five lures, but only three can have hooks.

> Tennessee restricted the use of umbrella rigs in 2002 because of increased mortality rates in striped and hybrid bass caught with the rigs. The restriction provided that if an array of more than three artificial lures or baits (with or without hooks) were used by a single rod and reel combination and the hook size was No. 6 or larger, then only one lure or bait could have a hook and that hook must be a single hook.

Other bassin’-related regs changes include:

> Reduction in the minimum size limit for smallmouths taken at Pickwick from 18″ to 15″.

> Changing the 17-23″ protected slot for largemouths taken at Cordell Hull to a 16-21″ protected slot, with a creel of three bass under 16 and two fish over 21.

Tip of the Day

Fall flippin’ tips with John Crews.

> “Let the shad tell you where they are and don’t get locked into any hard-set rules. It’s all about the bait, even when you’re flipping.”

> “The location of bait differs with every lake. In some lakes, the shad tend to concentrate in the main creek channels during the fall, while in other lakes the bait will stack up in the backs of creek flats. It’s important to be adaptive because the bait is always moving.”

> “Bass will get surprisingly shallow in the fall… I’m going to be very shallow in the fall, and I generally won’t flip a piece of cover unless it’s in 3 feet of water or less.”

> “When the bass get concentrated on shallow cover in the fall, it’s always best to keep your bait in the strike zone for as long as possible. Sure, you can pick one or two bass from it with a moving bait, but if you really pick it apart you may catch a lot of fish that you may have otherwise missed.”
