Today’s Top 3

1. It was the only place I’ve ever seen a largemouth bass and a seal in the same waters, so it was pretty cool.

Cowboys safety Gerald Sensabaugh talking about the Cal Delta and his bassin’ habit on ESPN.com. Hmmmm, ESPN…sounds familiar. He also said:

I’m a competitor, so this offseason I got really into competitive fishing. I was able to fish in quite a few tournaments this offseason and had a little bit of success, but I’m still learning and trying to get in.

Anyone in TX beat him this year?

2. Don’t miss Z tomorrow…

…throwing out the first pitch at the White Sox game. He told Bassmaster.com: “I’m nervous, and that’s something I’m not used to!” Told me he’s going to throw the Ztrain split-fingered fasty…just kiddin’.

IMO this is a bigger deal for bassin’ than just about everyone realizes. Go Z!

3. Fisherman’s dog breaks rods…

…including an Ugly Stik. All companies – All-Star, Shakespeare and Falcon – offer replacements, except Cabela’s. Props to the first 3. As to the last…buyer beware?

Tip of the Day

Ike on the dragonfly bite.

I’ve seen this before, never tried this hard to match the hatch:

> First, you’ll need the right bait. I generally throw a weightless Havoc plastic. On Sunday, we used Subwoofers because they had a blueish cast to them, just like the dragonflies we saw. Pick your bait by color. That’s the most important thing.

> The next thing that’s critical is size. Trim your baits so that they match the size of the local dragonflies and so that they look like a dragonfly body. Add a No. 4 hook and you’re ready to rig.

> It’s essential that you make long casts. This is a light-weight bait — I’m guessing one will weigh no more than 1/16 of an ounce — so you’ll need to start with a long spinning rod that has some tip to it.

> We fished pads last Sunday and caught several good fish under really tough conditions — low, shallow water that was really hot.

> I have won a ton of money doing it in smaller local events. In fact, it was one of my bread and butter techniques back when I was just getting started.

Or you could maybe just fish the River2Sea dragonfly:

Quote of the Day

This year everything is in its place. I’ve grown a lot in my faith. It’s hard to explain. Before I used to wonder if I could even make it out here. I don’t worry any more. If I do good, I do good. If I do bad, I do bad. I just take it day by day.

FLW pro Micah Frazier about how his faith has helped his fishing.
