Today’s Top 5

1. Godzilla smallies from Japan?

Don’t have to point out to you monster movie heads that “Gojira”/Godzilla was the result of a nuclear accident…which may be the same thing that gets us monster smallies there:

> The Environment Ministry surveyed commonly eaten fish and their cesium levels for the second time since the disaster in March 2011.

> It found a catfish with 30 times the allowable limit of cesium and a smallmouth bass with 44 times the limit.

> “Like the previous survey, concentrations (of cesium) tended to be higher in rivers and lakes than in the sea.”

This of course is related to the tragic Fukishima nuclear disaster, and **disclaimer** in no way makes light of that. Plus this totally looks real:

2. What’s the new 150 SHO look like?

Sneak peek courtesy of the guy who can’t git enuff bassin’ travel, Dave “Marathon Man” Mercer:

3.  For $5 an hour (lines and bait provided), an angler can also fish through one of the 16 holes in the floor while enjoying his burger and brew.

Hardwater fishin’ establishment on MN’s Lake of the Woods. Tough stuff that ice fishin’. Might have to have a food barge at all Elite events….

4. Help Tackle the Storm.

Buy an ornament and help don barone’s (and friends) awesome charity that helps kids and others get fishing tackle. One ornament = one rod and reel for a kid.

5. Vote for Z!

Help the Ztrain win an Outdoor Channel Golden Moose award. It’s easy – just scroll all the way down the fishin’ stuff to Z. And he fo sho deserves it…. Click here.

Tip of the Day

Tim Horton’s late-Nov crank tips.

> “I like to begin searching  in a main tributary that feeds the lake. I go halfway back into it then fish toward the back end.”

> Creek channel turns, or “channel swings,” are key locations to find schools of bass during November. His favorite lure is a small, compact Bomber Model 4A. He likes the wobble and thumping action of the 2 1/8-inch lure.

> When fishing channel swings, Horton is searching for curves with 45-degree banks. Normally these will be steeper banks within the creek channel. The key to catching bass in these areas is bouncing the crankbait off cover such as laydowns, stumps and rocks.

> “I really like to be fishing in stained water during November.”

> “The Bomber Model 4A will run 6- to 8-feet deep on 14-pound test fluorocarbon line. You get the most bites when the crankbait is consistently bouncing off the bottom.”

> “I like rootbeer chartreuse. It’s a confidence color for me.”

Quote of the Day

I guess for me, my toughest lake used to be Lake Martin, or any lake with Martin in it.

– The awesome David Dudley in an article about FLW pros’ toughest lakes. He also said:

Lake Sinclair [GA] is probably the stupidest lake to fish on. And the reason is that you have to go fishing to find them. It’s a hard lake to graph. It’s hard to practice on and to catch them. It’s tough to narrow down areas quickly because you really can’t graph the fish – it’s kind of like Okeechobee that way.

Dudley is a crack-up, man!

Shot of the Day

Ever see a 21″ yellow perch? May have been the Michigan state record, caught in 1947 and weighing 3-12 (replica below). FYI the word record yellow perch weighed 4-04 and was caught in NJ, of all places – in 1865, the year the Civil War ended. No record of the length. I caught a 26-lb largie in 1966, the year I was born….
