Back When You Could Fish…And Drink

First the nanny patrol disclaimer: In no way shape or form am I advocating or otherwise supporting the drinking of adult beverages on bassin’ boats…or any other vehicle, for that matter.

But if you’re having one, I may be persuaded….

Lol.

Anyhow, I’m sure you’re aware (I hope you are) how many things now standard in bassin’ were first required by B.A.S.S. Things we take for granted, like life vests, kill switches and…no alcohol on tourney boats.

Yep, not just in boats, but in derbies – meaning they did have to make a rule about that!

I read (re-read) recently that B.A.S.S. banned alcohol from tournament boats in the early ’70s. Which means that for a couple years, it was technically okay – if inadvisable – to keep yourself cool with a couple of cold ones. That’s pretty dang funny.

This is making me wonder exactly how Bobby Murray stayed so relaxed to win that first Classic. (Just kiddin’ Bobby!)

Happy New Year!

When I’m fishing it’s water, Gatorade, or Pepsi. I save the beer for dinner time once I’m off the lake. Never had the urge or desire to drink alcohol while boating.

Times have definitely changed since when I was a kid, because I remember my Dad and Uncle mixing up a pitcher of vodka and orange juice for the drive to Quebec (4.5 hours). The pitcher sat between them on the front seat and they each had a glass in-hand. It was kind of the norm back then…

It’s hard enough staying in the boat, and not hooking oneself (or partner) straight, never mind drunk! Even bank fishing drinking is a no go for me, and I really prefer if anyone with me abstains as well.

I just spent the weekend on Bull Shoals throwing an Alabama Rig in 30mph wind. Every time I caught a fish, I had at least 3 hooks in my sleeve and coat trying to get the fish unhooked while trying to keep the boat from bashing into the bank …while waves were crashing over the front of the boat. If I tried to do this while drinking, I would have to buy another boat….as well as 9 more lives!
