Anyone Remember Freshwater Doubles?

Look – I’m all for new and different…to a point. I mean, if you’ve had a ringside seat in bassin’ for, say, the last 10 years or so, you’ve seen more format changes than you can remember. Case in point: Freshwater Doubles.

I didn’t even remember this one, but someone pointed me to it. Back in 2004, I think it was, ESPN paired a bass fisherman and a walleye fisherman in teams to catch both species as part of the old Great Outdoor Games. One minute they’d be flipping, the next trolling.

Dumb? Nope. Interesting? Could be. Do you remember it? [Your answer here.]

No, this ain’t a veiled comment about the Malolactic Fermentation, Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, Memphis Leadership Foundation or whatever else Google brings up for MLF. I hope MLFers knock it out of the park. Can’t really see any downside to bassin’ success.

What I mean is, I don’t think Ray and company missed the boat back in the old days. Football is still about scoring points in 4 quarters, baseball is still about 9 innings of slow-as-dirt gum-chewing, hotdogs and some throwing and hitting, and at the core, bassin’ will always be about the most weight weighed at the end of the day.

I’m all out but will admit that I really wanted to post this just to use that photo. In fact, here it is again bigger:

Man… I laugh every time I glance at the picture! This would be a great photo for a caption contest. I can think of some of my own, but I’m sure the PC police are trolling around.

And yea, I hope Duckett and company live up to the hype and it is very entertaining.

I would like to see them delve deep into the psyche of each competitor so I can glean every ounce of bassin’ knowledge, as well as, pick up on subtle weaknesses I can later exploit.

Maybe that’s too much to ask…

The doubles format is interesting! Denny Brauer and Mike Gofron together are unstoppable!

I remember the great outdoor games Bass/Walleye format, in fact I was there in Madison Wisconsin when they held the tournament. The tourney was on the Madison Chain of lakes and I believe Denny Brauer and his walleye pro partner won it. I remember Gary Klein and Gerald Swindle being there also. I thought it was a neat idea and i’d like to see more special events like that. I walleye/smallmouth tournament in Green Bay WI would be fun to watch!

How about a largie-smallie tourney with specific minimums of each?

I was there at the great outdoor games on the Mad Chain. The best part was Iaconelli gambling on the slot lake of Mendota. Plus it was cool seeing the bass guys running the 215 Tritons. At the time the fastest walleye boats out there. Not to mention in 2004 the Mad Chain was one of the best fisheries in the nation.
