Kept waiting to run this photo from Mike Cusano of the NY BASS Federation – was waiting for winter, which it appears we never had, at least here on the East Coast. Anyone have one and fish a just-before-ice-in derby?
Here’s another way to enjoy the winter. Crazy-cold smallie fishing – looks fun, but Greg Huff (host of this piece) told me he had to retie in the truck, it was so cold. I believe it: 15 below!

I have used my aluminum bass boat as an ice breaker before to get down a channel with 1/4″ of ice on it in order to get to the area I wanted to fish. Then I had to break up the ice on the point and wait for the wind to blow it away before I could cast. Caught a nice 4-13 smallie though which made it all worthwhile.

Here’s a link to a photo I took that day of my trail through the ice:

Many times have I fished Geneva here in SE WI where there was ice in Fontana, Geneva bay, the flats, but we would do ok with the smallies on a few points on blades, spoons, hair, and FnF. It’s not my favorite fishing conditions, but keeps you fishing till almost new years most years. This year we fished all year out there.
