Today’s Top 3

1. Check this 11.79 Delta largie…

…caught in a WON derby this weekend. How ’bout that as the fish of a lifetime, let alone weighed in a tourney. Dude looks like he’s still angry at ’em….

2. Top 25 Bassmaster Classic patterns.

Well, a little website called Bassin’Fan broke the mold with pattern reporting when it got pattern info for the Top 5 anglers in big derbies. That’s been the bar until we BassGolders chased down 1st-10th patterns from a few Elites last year. Now the bar’s at…25. Yep, the Top 25 patterns from the Bassmaster Classic, in short form, here. Looks like I lost a little more hair chasing ’em down….

3. A-rig wins G’ville EverStart.

Oops, forgot to mention this on Monday. From Bassin’Fan’s coverage:

> He caught every ounce of the 86-07 he weighed over 3 days on an umbrella rig.

> He located a semi-backwater area off a major creek arm and once he navigated through a culvert, he was in the promised land.

> The fish holding in the area he located were suspended about halfway up in about 8-10′. The spot was helped by the presence of plentiful baitfish.

> “They were hitting that rig so good, I didn’t want to put it down,” he said.

> Gear: 7’9” heavy-action Shimano Crucial umbrella rig rod, Shimano Chronarch reel (6.5:1), 50-pound Sufix 832 Advanced Superline, 5-wire Yellow Hammer Spinnerbait Rig, 3/16-oz Revenge Swimbait Hedz XL jigs (shad), 3.8” Keitech Swing Impact FAT swimbait (black shad).

Looks like the Yellow Hammer is made in AL (pic below), and yep, all deets will be in BassGold soon.

News

1. Bass Mafia pro staff announced.

Elites: Greg Hackney, Stephen Browning, Jeremy Starks. FLW: Ray Scheide, Stetson Blaylock.

Mafia with no Jersey guys??

2. FLW Tour’s Casey Martin and…Boing.

Little-known but highly regarded Spook-type bait manufacturer Boing Lures, sounds like AR custom-bait painter Dwain Batey is part of the team (way to go Dwain!).

3. Outdoor Channel-Intermedia Outdoors merger wrinkle.

Done deal? Not necessarily. Bilyun-aire on the move, from the Fishing Wire:

> Stan Kroenke’s Kroenke Sports and Entertainment tossed its respective hat into the ring.

> Now, the board of Outdoor Channel Holdings, Inc. says it will start talks with Kroenke’s group about a takeover.

> Now, IMO and Kroenke Sports and Entertainment seem headed for a showdown.

FYI, Kroenke owns the St. Louis Rams, the Denver Nuggets and misc other stuff including part of World Fishing Network. Intermedia Outdoors owns lots of fish/hunt media stuff including In-Fisherman and Bassin’Fan.com.

4. Fox Sports 1 = ESPN competitor?

In other TV billionaire-type news, Fox announced that it’s going after ESPN with the new Fox Sports 1. Can a competitor take out some of ESPN’s soft white underbelly? Yep, possible. Can Fox do it? Don’t know. Make the popcorn, let’s watch.

Does this mean anything for fishin’? If they were smart, yes, but….

Headline of the Day

Cold front may slow bass fishing

From a Florida news site no less. What’s next, “Bream biting crickets”?!

Tip of the Day

Brandon Palaniuk: Getting to know your cranks.

> “I spent hours throwing lures over rocks in varying depths of water. That way, I got the feedback of a rock to know that the lure was reaching its depth, and I could make minute changes with the boat to know when each lure reached its maximum depth.”

> Palaniuk said that he has found that sticking with a particular bait long enough to understand exactly how it feels and reacts has helped him get better…. “The more you fish a lure, the more you understand its vibration pattern and that helps you know if there is grass on the lure, or a fish has subtly struck it. You want to know how deep it will dive, but you also need to know more about how the lure acts, and what it feels like while swimming and hitting the structure.”

Quote of the Day

Fans of some of the other “minor” sports are forced to put up with total clowns in those roles.

– Bassin’Fan head honcho Johnny Johnson talking about the dynamite duo/wonder twins, Zona and Sanders, being awesome at what they do. He’s right…getting choked up just thinkin’ about it….

Btw, “clowns” is one of Johnson’s favorite words.

Shot of the Day

What may be the new world record freshwater striper, 70 gigantoid lbs, recently caught from AL’s Bankhead Reservoir by 65-years-young James Bramlett. Whale is 45.5″ long, 37.75″ around, caught on a 10″ gizzard shad on a 6/0 Mustad hook. You may recall that Mustad was a part – sort of – of AR resident Rodney Ply’s shoulda-been million-dollar world record freshwater striper debacle…but that’s a different story. Congrats to Jim – a huge freakin’ fish!
