You Sure You Know How to Cast?

Of course you do, right? Mebbe not.

Had a recent convo with fellow Jerseyite Pete Gluszek, who talked to me about this on-the-water school he runs. Not the Bass University deal, but it’s related to that. This one Pete does himself, on the water. Sounds pretty cool.

One thing that stood out when he said it was that he spends a lot of time teaching guys how to cast. My first reaction was, really?

Because casting seems so basic, and because I’m sure Pete’s taking guys out who know how to cast.

But maybe not like a top-level pro. I’ll be first in that line. I can put a bait in most places, but I’m not in the same solar system as the pros, or guys like Zona who could be pros but aren’t.

I remember being in Ike’s boat one time, watching him cast a spinning rod. Guy could put a bait on a spot the size of a penny, like 50 yards away. Was scary.

Anyhow, I forgot about Pete’s comment until I saw this Johnny Crews vid interview of Pete. After I stopped laughing about the poolside “set” and Pete’s uh…let’s say unfortunate…pose, I tuned in in time to hear Pete talk about the fact that lots of folks don’t know how to cast, stuff about elbows, that kinda thing.

I’m gonna tell Pete I need a lesson. You?

Pete is hilarious and is as knowledgeable as he is observant. I’m not even in the same Casting Galaxy as most of the Pro’s I’ve been in the boat with so I am in no way passing judgement but a I’ve seen a few that reminded me of me in terms of getting hung up and backlashing more than you might think a Pro would experience. Some a little more famous than you might think (but again we all have bad days). The others have brought tears to my eyes with the technique and places they can put a bait: in adverse conditons, on the first attempt, over the backboard, off the glass, around the rim, nothing but net type stuff!
