Today’s Top 3

1. 11-lber caught at…Table Rock?

Since when does an upland rez like the Rock grow fishies in the DDs? Since Monday, I guess. Deets: Mike Webb (TR guide), 11.07 largie, 26″ long and 21″ girth, caught on an A-rig in 30′ off a point near Big Cedar Marina. Fish was released.

Word is the TR record largie is 11-13, caught a while back. TR also has the state spotted bass record at 7-08.

2. Bye-bye world-class smallmouth fishery.

Awesome Minneapolis Star-Tribune outdoor writer Dennis Anderson on the MN DNR’s arguably lobotomized decision to increase the smallie limit from one per day to six (a 600% increase!) on Mille Lacs – to allegedly protect wally-fish…that are getting harvested in nets anyway.

3. Gobies in Oneida Lake, NY?

> …two unsubstantiated reports of anglers reporting round gobies while ice fishing. In both cases, the anglers caught perch through the ice, which then regurgitated a baitfish that the fishermen believed was a round goby.

Tip of the Day

How to recognize shad spawns.

> Gizzard shad can spawn just about anywhere on a lake, including weedy shallow backwaters. On the main lake they like hard-bottom pockets with laydowns or riprap banks.

> Look For: Excessive baitfish activity at the surface, blackbirds and other birds on the shoreline.

> In lakes with a lot of vegetation, threadfin will spawn just about anywhere. Without vegetation they spawn near boat docks, buck brush, riprap and other hard objects.

> Look For: Ripples from small schools of spawning threadfins moving erratically in the shallows, birds on the shoreline, and feeding fish breaking the surface.

Quote of the Day

Winning is an inherited trait that can be learned.

Joe Balog writing on Bassin’Fan. This makes my head hurt: is it inherited, or learned, or…?

Shot of the Day

Is the cicada bite on? If it’s ever on in your area and you absolutely need a bait that mimics it, for $21.95 you can get this beeeutiful Megabass cicada imitation. Sounds goofy, but it’s a Megabass so you know it works:

> The Siglett is outfitted with a pair of translucent wings made of semi-hard plastic, which not only slide up and down, but act as large lips that produce a jittering bug action. When retrieved, the Siglett’s wings naturally open up allowing the bait to crawl.

> The Megabass Siglett’s line eye is also located at its tail to insure maximum casting distance and accuracy.
