Tidbits from ICAST – forgot about these:

1. Mark Davis can draw!

Don’t ask how we got onto this, long story, but the bottom line was I challenged Mark to draw a bass in 5 minutes or less, and here’s what he came up with. Pretty good!

2. Aaron Martens gear tidbits.

Talked to him for a bit, came away with:

> He used 5-lb line at Green Bay. Yes, he mentioned that on BassFan too, but think about that. He said sometimes it took 5-10 minutes to get a fish in. That takes cojones, mang!

> How did he find 100 spots on Green Bay so fast? Side-imaging electronics. “Once you know what to look for it’s easy,” he said. Maybe to him it’s easy….

> He uses a uni-knot to tie his baits on too. Says it’s the strongest knot there is. Tied it faster than anyone else I’ve ever seen.

3. Didja hear about Clunn’s Freak bait?

A deep-diving squarebill!

> “The Freak is the only deep-diving squarebill that’s out there, and it’s one I wanted to make for a long time. Everyone likes shallow-diving squarebills so I always felt a deep-diving squarebill like the Freak would perform just as well – and it does.”

> “The depth it reaches falls within the mid- to high teen range, but there is really no definitive depth because so much is determined by how skilled the angler, the line diameter and other variables.”

Tip of the Day

Marking your flipping line. More from TX pro Matt Reed, from this great article:

> When fishing his typical 50- or 60-pound green braid, he colors the section of line above the lure — just enough to match the depth of the water he’s fishing—using a black magic marker.

> The simple alteration makes the line itself part depthfinder, part strike indicator. “If the colored section of line stops sinking before you know it should, or if it keeps going when you know it should stop, set the hook,” Reed says.
