1. Dude catches 13 lbs (4 fish) on A/U-rig.

How ’bout them apples? So much for the A/U rigs not whackin’ ’em in the summer…which should be a lot like the winter.

These were caught on some lake in TX, “classic deep-water spots,” according to the guy that caught ’em. “Just count it down to the fish and either reel it through or right above them with a slow steady retrieve.”

Wonder if most folks just don’t have the patience to fish deep….

2. New Dobyns-backed Cali circuit?

Western stick Gary Dobyns apparently is one of the guys behind a new California circuit launching in January. Gary quotes from the vid in the above link:

> “We’ll have unique things, different than what other circuits have done.”

> “I think it’ll be a huge thing for the West, something we’ve always needed.”

> “We’ll have television, magazines – we’re going to make some fishing heroes in the West.”

3. TN has done all it can do for basses?

> “Overall, we don’t have a whole lot [of regulating] left we want to do,” said Bobby Wilson, TWRA’s chief of fisheries. “As far as creel limits and size limits we’re probably not going to be doing anything drastic.”

> It took about a quarter century to get there. About the time Wilson started working for TWRA 32 years ago bass fishing in Tennessee had started to slip. A lot of fishermen realized it, but they didn’t want to talk about it.

> Statewide, Tennessee officially has no size limit on smallmouth, largemouth or spotted bass, but most lakes do. “Protect the bass,” Wilson said of the differing size and creel limits across the state. “We feel like we have done that with the regulations that we have in place.

> “We still get complaints…but we’re not getting a lot of complaints. That tells me that we’ve done a pretty good job with things.”

What up with our TN brothers not complainin’?!

 

Tip of the Day

Fly-fishin’-related tips for froggin’ (seriously).

> A tip for fishing plastic frogs using braided line: If you apply a silicone dry fly spray or paste to the first 5 feet of the line, it will keep the line floating on the surface, ensuring better hook sets and frog performance. Add the floatant about every 25 casts.

> To make your frog hop out of the water a foot or so, cut a circle of clear plastic about the size of a quarter out of a plastic lure or hook box. Drill a hole in the center just large enough to slide the plastic over the line tie of the frog. Super Glue it to the nose of the frog. After the cast, give the frog a medium jerk and the frog will hop out of the water. Fly tiers have used this trick on their poppers for ages, works like a charm….
