Today’s Top 5

Welcome new BassBlaster readers!

1. College boys spoon up Pickwick win.

When the heck’s the last time you heard about spoonin’ up a win?? Well, Bethel U’s Jacob Hardy and Jake Lawrence (two Jakes?) weighed 40-14 from AL’s Pickwick to win this weekend’s Carhartt College Series Wild Card tournament to head to the Carhartt College Series National Championship.

Word is the ledge swimbait bite was on in practice, but the fish got so pummeled by that that Lawrence threw a Strike King Sexy Spoon out there and caught ’em all.

Here’s the spoon:

All this sexy spooning fish talk reminds me of Euro carp weirdos like this guy:

2. KVD not in BassFan top 10!

Don’t pay rapt attention to the Bassin’Fan World Rankings like I used to, but as the guy who kinda created ’em, watched ’em, etc. for years, I never saw this:

No KVD. The times they are a changin’?

3. I do like the stability I have now.

Chad Brauer talking about not being a bassin’ pro anymore and instead being a high school teacher and basketball coach. Wonder if he’s eyein’ a high school bassin’ team….

News

1. Howell, BassGold win on James River.

Randy Howell won the Open throwing a Senko shallow, and that’s exactly what BassGold showed has won and should win again. Congrats to both!

2. Ott DeFoe junior slump?

> Ott DeFoe missed just one 50-cut in his first 2 seasons on the Bassmaster Elite Series, and that by only a pound at the Arkansas River in 2011. This year he’s missed three in five outings….

3. AL: G. Loomis owners derby at Gville this weekend.

4. TX: Jason Pack benefit derby at Fork June 29-30.

5. AR: Big Bass Bonanza June 28-30 on AR River.

> The angler with the overall biggest bass gets a guaranteed $50,000. The river is divided into five pools for the tournament, and winners of the other four pools are guaranteed $10,000 each.

Wonder if Kevin Short and Scotty Rook know about that.

6. AZ: Gizzards hurting Roosevelt largies?

> The gizzard shad reproduce in such numbers that their young compete directly with threadfin shad and the newly hatched bass, crappie and bluegill for plankton. As they grow, they out-compete the full grown but still small threadfin shad for the plankton — only to grow too big for any of the prized sport fish to prey on.

> Fishing advocates say a dramatic decline in the catch rates for bass and crappie can have an impact on the regional economy. A 2001 survey estimated that bass fishermen at Roosevelt Lake pump $63 million annually into the regional economy.

7. CA: Great largie bite at Isabella.

> …probably due to the extended drought and drawdown, the bass bite has gone nuts again…the big fish are once again on the prowl…anglers are still taking advantage of the best bass fishing in years.

> Thirty-fish days and five-fish limits weighing well in excess of 40 pounds are showing up with an astounding regularity, and most weekend tournaments are being won with at least 30 pounds….

8. MN: DNR says Mille Lacs smallies will be fine…

..but then there’s pics like this:

Yep, smallie filets.

9. KY: Weird white-bass-only fish kill at Cave Run.

Tip of the Day

How Dave Wolak uses electronics.

> The transducer for my front graph has what’s called a universal transducer to make it look like its part of the trolling motor head. This helps me avoid cracking transducer heads off on the bottom when fishing shallow, and I’d say 50% of my bass fishing is done shallow.

> Otherwise, my front graph is linked to my back graph so that the GPS waypoints I mark driving at the console pop up on the front graph as well, and vice-versa.

> As for new and advanced features like side- and down-imaging, I only use them about 10-15 percent of the time, but those times are usually the crucial times where that technology can make or break my position in a tournament. As an example, if I find a school of fish and they move, relocating that school is much quicker and easier with side- and down-imaging.

> What’s most important in terms of electronics is never becoming completely reliant on them. Sometimes being able to position the boat by lining up features on the bank or using your eyes to detect bottom transitions will get you into more fish than the best units out there.

Quote of the Day

Keith caught a 4-lb smallmouth minutes before he died during that final tournament.

– From an excellent blog post by Elite pro Brandon Card about fishing with the son of a man who died fishing a BFL. Highly recommended. These lines also spoke to me:

> Three years ago, (the man’s) youngest son, Andy, died in a car accident at age 17.  Jake said that through that tragedy, his dad found strength in God and was able to encourage other people who were going through the similar things.

> Jake told me that he and his brother find peace on the water just fishing.  That is where he is happiest and feels closest to his dad.

Dang…wellin’ up….
