Today’s Top 4
1. Dean Rojas won the FLW Cup!

Not really, but his frogs did.

FLW cup Winner Randall Tharp fished a swim-jig then a Spro Bronzeye Jr. 60 in two backwaters to win the FLW Cup on the Red-ish River this weekend. FLW listed the color as white/orange legs – maybe it was tropical white?

Not only that:

> 2nd-place finisher Jacob Wheeler flipped and then fished a Spro Bronzeye 65 (nasty shad).

> 4th-place finisher and BFL All-American winner Kerry Milner ended up fishing a Spro Bronzeye 65 and Bronzeye Junior 60, also in backwaters.

How ’bout them apples?

Tharp won a $500,000 gift card for Wally-Mart (haha!):

One last thing: the only and only bassin’ pro from Bee Branch, AR finished 5th. Coulda maybe finished higher but fished for the win. Larry can still fish your lights out.

2. I didn’t have to mow two million lawns to pay for it.

U of MN Duluth student Aaron Teal and aspirin’ pro talkin’ ’bout how he realized as a young’un that bassin’ derbies weren’t prohibitively expensive to enter.

Now he says: “I couldn’t do what I do without my sponsors because fishing is so expensive.”

Welcome to bassin’, mang!

3. Top 12 patterns/baits from St. Lawrence.

Awesome info there, more will be in BassGold soon. Here’s me interviewin’ Bernie Schultz on the way to the weigh-in – yes the boat was movin’!

4. What happens when you hit the gas…

…instead of the brake at the ramp. This weekend on Lake Fork, TX. Ouch.

Tip of the Day

St. Clair summer tactics.

With the Elites there now, local stick Joe Balog on the lake:

> “With St. Clair, the best way to find fish is to pick up a crankbait, wait for the wind to blow and put it at your back and try to go 2 miles an hour cranking and then crank and crank and crank until you catch a big one. Then go back and dial it in when it’s calm and try to find the sweet spots.”

> “You can get on this lake and you can drive around all day on your electronics and rarely will you see much of anything. It’s pretty flat and the fish will relate to breaks in the grass and sandy spots more than anything. The only way, usually, to find them is to fish.”

> “You have to re-find them every day and you have to have confidence you’re in the good areas.”

> “Traditionally this time of year, the majority of fish are either relating to current around the St. Clair River or the channels that come into the lake or they’re in the deeper basins of the lake from 16 to 20 feet.”

> There’s a strong population of fish that live in 4 to 6 feet…targeting those fish with spinnerbaits and jerkbaits.

Quote of the Day

Last year when the schedule came out and I saw that the Cup was going back to the Red River and Shreveport, this was all I could think about; I knew that it was going to be my time. A lot of the lakes we go to don’t afford me the opportunity to win. But this is the way I like to fish.

FLW Cup winner Randall Tharp. Weird how many times that pre-win feeling has happened.

Shot of the Day

You’ve seen those giant Rapalas. Here’s one someone actually fished, and what happened. Wuz in Australia, where they call groupers gropers (!), what that giant fish is.
