Today's Top 5

1. J-POW smacks TBend.

First, Jacob Powroznik needs a nickname. Dude is too good a fisherman not to have one, and Skeet's already taken so…. Got one better than J-POW, let me know.

Second, J-POW can flat catch 'em. Been doing it for years on somethin' called the Fishing League Worldwide Tours of the World…wide. No surprise he did it on the Elites.

> "To get into the Classic feels like someone just gave me a million dollars. You don’t get many opportunities to win one of these events. It’s so hard to do. To do it my first year is a blessing."

Third, how 'bout those Worldwide Tours fishermens. May not have heard much about 'em, but Worldwide Tour Elite "rookies" have won 2 outta 4 so far…and finished 1-2-3 in this derby.

Btw, guessing from the Bassmaster.com coverage he didn't use any actual lures (doh!), so we'll see what Bassin'Fan be sayin' later…but he was fishin' for spawners.

2. Mark Davis' gets worst finish yet…

…this Elite season: 4th! Dude has finished 3rd, 3rd, 2nd and 4th since the Classic. And cuz of that he also be overdue for a nickname.

Help Mercer? Z? Sanders? Anyone?

3. [Your name here] pro.

Scrollin' thru Faceybook posts, looks like "PAA pros," "MLF pros" and [whatever] pros fish Bassmaster Elite Series events. Wonderin' why these ain't…Elite Series pros?

Has the Elite Series become a jumpin' off point for other bidnesses?

Thinkin' about startin' the sausage McBeef patty fantasy derby series, so they are all now officially sausy McBeef patty pros…y'all heard it here first-like!

4. TN: New "Alabama bass" record.

> The TN Wildlife Resources Agency has confirmed a pair of state fishing records, one for a recently caught Alabama bass and another for a spotted bass caught three years ago.

> The TWRA’s State Record Fish Program previously had considered each of the varieties to be subspecies of spotted bass and grouped both into the same category.

Hokay…. Pretty sure I hold the record for the New Jersey "looks like a spotted bass" largie subspecies record. Sheesh. Give a kid a microscope, look what happens….

Spotted (caption says "striped" – derp) bass on the L and "Alabama bass" on the R:

5. Two spots for 18.13 lbs!

FLWer Cody Meyer:

> Ever wonder what 18.13 for 2-spotted bass look like??? Boom!!! Here they are… A 9.03 & 9.13 weighed and released to catch another day!!! Not only did I catch my personal best spots, but also had a 40 pound limit!! UNREAL…

Tip of the Day

Jordan Lee: Footballin' tips.

> “Whenever the water temperature is…in the low 40 to 50-degree range, you’ll get a lot more bites by fishing your football jigs slowly. I’ll sweep my rod very slowly to the side in order to maintain bottom contact. I want to feel each my football jig rolling over each individual rock, shell or piece of gravel. Fishing so slow can drive you crazy, but it becomes much easier when you start getting some big bites."

> “Once the water warms up into the 50-degree range, you can actually utilize a steady, reeling retrieve and get a lot of bites. It’s almost like fishing with a crankbait. I’ll use a 3/4-ounce model and simply reel it while maintaining bottom contact. To help keep contact with the bottom, I frequently trim the jig’s skirt and use a smaller trailer…."

> “Bass love edges and irregularities. If you’re fishing down a straight, pea gravel bank and notice a transition to slightly larger rock, that’s where the bass are going to be…you’ll find the largest congregations of bass around any type of transition.”

> “In most cases, there’s a lot of line between you and the fish, which results in lost energy on the hookset. In order to bury that hook and reduce your chances of losing a key fish, give it everything you have.”

Quote of the Day

Truth be known, if a majority of fishermen was required to run a 7-minute mile I don’t think many of us could do it.

FLWer David Dudley on the importance of anglers being in shape…which he feels many are not.

Dave posted a shot of his hamster for motivation:

Hawhawhaw!
