Nixon on Legends Derby: Aw Shoot…

Homer facepalm....

…And here we go again, in the vein of whether this is a real sport or not, I quote from Bassin’Fan – Larry Nixon talking about why he’s not fishing the BASS Legends Tourney:

“They (B.A.S.S) won’t let me fish it in a Chevy jersey. I was invited to fish it, and I could have used my Stratos/Evinrude boat, which isn’t wrapped with Chevy, but when it came right down to it, I couldn’t wear my Chevy jersey. It’s in my (Team Chevy) contract that I have to wear it.”

That sucks, but who’s to blame here? No one. I mean, you can’t say B.A.S.S. should flip the bird to Toyota or Larry should do the same to Chevy…although it would be cool if Chevy made an exception.

All it this really shows is that while it’s nice having more than one truck company (etc.) sponsoring bassin’ fishin’, things can get messy in a hurry.

Who loses the most here? Walk down to the bathroom and look in that shiny thing hanging above the sink. Now wave.

Yep, that’s who.

B.A.S.S. is to blame… period. To let the sponsor dictate who will compete in an event is ludicrous. B.A.S.S. should have explained to Toyota right out of the gate that though their sponsorship of the event was appreciated, they don`t get to choose who does or doesn`t compete in the event.

To operate this way really does bring into question whether professional bass angling is a legitimate sport since the competitors in this situation are not a true and complete representation of the best.

I can’t honestly believe that Toyota is so afraid of one dude in a Chevy jersey that might get his chest in view of a camera! They could always just blur it out like other shows do with the Lat/Long coordinates when they have a shot of the Sonar/Chart Plotter. I completely understand that Toyota dropped some seriously major league coin to sponsor the whole series and in principle you never want to give a competitor free advertising but this just seems petty. It’s only a half day tournament for crying out loud! Toyota has enough worldwide cash flow to buy out the Big Three

…whenever they feel like it. I don’t ever recall seeing that in golf or auto racing which are similar formats. Sorry Dale Jr., you can’t race in the Coke 600 because your sponsor is a Pepsi product! Sorry Tiger, you can’t enter the E-Harmony Open because you go through mistresses like you do golf balls! Ha! Couldn’t resist that last part.
