Today's Top 6

1. Combs pwns the TTBC yo!

This weekend Keith Combs won his THIRD TTBC in 4 years at Lake Fork, TX, this time with a record-setting 3-day weight of 110 lbs. More on the #s later, for now here's how he caught 'em:

Main bait

  • Strike King 6XD (chartreuse/powder blue back)

Day 1

  • Mostly longlining that bait and a Strike King 10XD (TN shad)

Day 2

  • Casting 6XD to secondary point and burning it back
  • Point dropped from 11' to 15'
  • Burned  bait to get reaction bite "just like Falcon" and activate the school

Day 3

  • One here/one there on 6XD
  • Later fished Strike King Shadalicious swimbait on 1-oz head, let it sink to the bottom and slow-roll it through the school
  • 5-12 was his smallest bass

Btw NONE of these deets were on the major bassin' news sites, but were on Strike King Facebook – make sher you're follerin' if you ain't already.

2. TTBC @ Fork by the #s.

  • 50 anglers
  • 3 days
  • 538 bass weighed
  • 5.02 lbs = average fish weight [!!]
  • 110 lbs = Combs' winning weight

If'n he wins one more TTBC, Keith will be this stout:

3. What's the 6XD magic?

Falcon, Wheeler, Douglas – these are just a few of the lakes where the Strike King 6XD has chalked up national-level wins over the past couple years. What's it about that bait? Strike King say:

  • It'll get to 20+ feet with the right setup (10-lb line).
  • KVD and other pros were instrumental in its design.
  • Has a different action – semi-tight, wandering – than most deep cranks.
  • Doesn't pull real hard so you can throw it all day.

4. Ricky Green passes on.

RIP bassin' legend:

> …died on Sunday at age 69. He'd battled severe lung issues for several years and received a transplant on May 1, but developed an infection that led to his death.

> "Getting that transplant was the only chance he had to get back to doing what he liked to do, which was being in the outdoors," said longtime friend Larry Nixon. "It was extremely risky, but he decided to do it, and I admire him for that."

5. 2 accused of Gville cheating…

..using "previously caught fish." Remember innocent til proven guilty-like….

Tip of the Day

Jordan Lee: Fishing the shad spawn.

> …you’d better get on the water early…way before sunrise. If you get there at 9 a.m. on a sunny day, you’ll probably miss out on all the activity. Predawn and sunrise is when the action is at its best.

> The eggs and milt are released by a mixed school of males and female shad as they swim together near shallow objects during the lowest light of the morning. The eggs then stick to vegetation, shallow rocks and floating docks, and the bass show up to eat the adult shad while all this activity is taking place.

> Hands down, my favorite lure for fishing around the shad spawn is a 3/8-oz Booyah spinnerbait with double willowleaf blades. Keep it simple and choose a spinnerbait with shades of white and chartreuse in the skirt.

> Very few lures imitate a shad better than a spinnerbait. In fact, that spawning shad will actually follow your spinnerbait and bump into it as you retrieve it.

>  The closer you can cast to your target the better. It’s also crucial that you retrieve your spinnerbait tight and parallel to the dock floats or riprap. The more accurate you are, the more bites you’re likely to get. Parallel casts and retrieves, versus perpendicular, are critical.
