Today's Top 3

1. How Christie caught 'em…

…after squeakin' by G-man (4 oz) and the Hack Attack (8 oz), a killa for those guys:

> His main game keyed in on current in Illinois Bayou, he said, triggering reaction bites by swimming a jig…a 1/2-ounce Booyah jig with a black-and-blue Yum Craw Chunk.

> “I was fishing pretty dirty water, and that jig has really loud rattles. I would stroke that jig, trying to get the big ones to react.”

> “I saw every bass that came up and got it. Every fish that bit didn’t come up to get it. They came horizontally.

> Christie searched for larger bass by looking for matted weeds. “All of a sudden you’d see a point that had a mat. That’s a perfect place for a big one…." He hit transition areas between where bass are known to spawn, and “choke-down” currents, where the channel narrowed.

> “Once I felt the current really, really get moving, I cast where the current hit it directly. Wind helped too. If I could get current and wind, that’s what I needed."

> “I found there’s two times of the day when they’re really eating, and if you’re not around them at those times, you can fish right by them.”

2. 9+ smallie??

That's the claim for this fish:

Pic taken from this vid – which is kinda painful to watch in an infomercial way (they call a net a Frabill, etc.).

THIS THE ONLY SCALE THEY HAD?? DERRRRRRRP!!

3. Sturgeon Bay Open results killer!

Looks like no one on staff had a camera or internet connection (derp) but:

  • Winners had 65.62 lbs of smallies over 2 days
  • Runners-up also 60+
  • At least 6 30+ bags of smallies on day 1
  • 8.29 was big fish:

From this article. Genius.

7. Elite-requested 'Trap floaters.

> …special run of the SuperNatural patterns in the Floater model. This stemmed from some conversations with Elite pros Cliff Crochet and Boyd Duckett about how effective our Floater Rat-L-Trap is but how few colors we make it in.

> This model is perfect for fishing over shallow wing-dam cuts on rivers, grass just under the surface, and all shallow waters.

Limited run, git 'em while ya can! Jess click here-like:

Tip of the Day

KVD on his electronics.

Good article:

> His boat looks like the cockpit of a 747. He has two wide-screen Humminbird graphs at the console and at the bow, which have GPS/mapping and offer down- and side-imaging sonar and are connected by an Ethernet cable.

> His front units are also wired into a 360 imaging unit mounted on the trolling motor shaft that provides a view around the boat, with the emphasis on the area ahead.

> Transducers and GPS antennas mounted at the bow and transom provide a more accurate and thorough view of his surroundings.

> One of the bow screens displays 360 imaging while the other has mapping and sonar simultaneously. The 360 allows him to see fish and cover ahead of the boat.

> One console unit is programmed with split-screen viewing of three sonar views – down-imaging, two-dimensional, and side-imaging – while another screen displays a topo map.

> Once he’s in a potential area, he zig-zags near structure looking for subtleties, such as isolated weedbeds away from a major weedline, logs/stumps, or small rock piles – all of which can hold bass that get overlooked by most anglers.

> “Most anglers overlook the importance of changes in bottom composition. An area where two different bottom types (sand to rock, soft to hard) come together can be a fish magnet, especially for smallmouths. And with the different color schemes offered on a graph, these changes become quite noticeable.”

> When he sees something noteworthy, he’ll move the cursor on the graph on top of the spot and save a waypoint. "I don’t have to drive on top of it and disturb whatever fish may be lurking there."

> Down-imaging comes into play in deep water for summer and winter fishing. It gives a clearer view of individual fish and a more detailed picture than 2D sonar.

> VanDam will run a split screen with down-imaging on one side and 2D on the other. “It’s great for dropshotting because you’ll see fish that don’t always show up on 2D sonar. However, there are things I don’t see on down-imaging that I see on 2D, such as sand grass or cover close to the bottom."
