Today's Top 5

1. 'Nother Chatter win for Hite.

'Bout a month ago, longtime FLWer Brett "don't call me Davy" Hite won the Okeechobee FLW. This weekend, in his first Elite Series derby, he won at Seminole. Two FL lakes, both wins on ChatterBaits. This time:

> Hite targeted hefty female prespawners staging along stretches of grassy banks on the main river. With his boat positioned in 6-8', he was close enough to the bank to have been able to cast and hit it. He cast to the edge of the grass.

> Hite’s go-to lure all four days was a Z-Man ChatterBait in 3/8- and 1/2-oz depending on whether the grass was low or high in the water column.

> …caught most of his bass on green pumpkin, but also used black/blue in the morning or to give the bass something new to look at. Trailer was usually a 4 1/2" Yamamoto Swimming Senko in green pumpkin with a dyed chartreuse tail or black/blue.

2. Davy be buff!

Speaking of Hites (no relation), Davy is in the best shape I'ver ever seen him. Check it:

Told me he's been working out a bunch. Not sure if it's for MMA, Tough Mudders or what.

3. Vixen fo sho back.

Rumors were true, Reaction Innovations' awesome topwater is back, plus new color ghost herring (pictured). No more buying one for $100 on eBay.

4. MLFers get smart.

Have your own MLF derby = smart in theory but have not downloaded the app. Does not look like they thought of the biggest prize there, though….

Not sure how it'll work on the official Get Smart phone?

5. 21 syllables.

Here they is: The Dick Cepek Tires Bassmaster Elite at Lake Seminole presented by Hardee’s.

Can you tell that's a fishin' derby??

Amazes me that Sanders, Zona and Mercer always (mostly) manage to get these names right. Btw, Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious is only 14.

Lucky. Hope this doesn't mean PFDs:

> Neither Skiles, 64…nor Pruitt were wearing safety devices….

Tip of the Day

Jacob Wheeler: Don't fish what was.

> “In early spring bass tournaments in particular, you always hear about guys whacking ‘em in practice and then weighing in 8 pounds each day of the tournament. That happens because they got too caught up in what the fish were doing a couple days ago and weren’t flexible."

> "If you’re finding fish in the mouth of a spawning flat, more than likely those schools of fish will keep coming toward you. If I’m catching fish that are very pale, that immediately tells me the fish are coming to me from deeper water and will continue to do so."

> "Big, white-colored bass are an awesome sign during the prespawn."

> “If I’m catching really dark-colored bass in practice, I’m more apt to use a run and gun strategy. Those bass have been shallow for a while, which means there may not be fresh schools pulling up on a regular basis."

Quote of the Day

No man in history has been up to his ass in bass as deeply as VanDam.

– If you say so…from a Sports Illustrated article on this year's Classic. Guess it's a biggish deal because it's SI, but it's also overwritten as usual.

A few nuggets in there tho, includin' these:

> When Aaron Martens, the reigning B.A.S.S. Angler of the Year, takes off his Boob Suit, the suit he puts on is Prada. [Prada I can believe, but a Boob Suit??]

> “As a kid I’d see a puddle,” Paul Mueller says, “and wonder if there were fish in it.” [Love that!]

> Ish Monroe: “I don’t want to go into detail, but my friend was found dead the next morning, and if I had been with him, there’s a 50-50 chance I’d be dead too. Fishing kept me out of drugs, I’ve never been to jail, and that’s why I always say that tournament fishing saved my life.” [Ish is awesome…and needs his own TV show.]
