Flippin’ overdone?, 10-lber done wrong!, FLWer carp attack

Welcome to Jay Kumar's BassBlaster, your daily-ish email of the best o' bassin'!

Today's Top 3

1. Is flippin' overdone?

Before you call the nuthouse, hear me out: Not flippin' everywhere, but…case in point:

The Fiesta Bowl o' bassin' was won this weekend by UCF on the Big O. Quote:

> “We saw that everybody was flipping in our area in practice and we tried flipping but didn’t catch much.” The UCF Knights opted for moving baits…reeling worms….

Reelin' worms! Okay, sorta a swimbait, but answer me this: You go to a pad field, what do you do…during a cold front? Rest my case.

Btw, here's what they threw, a Zoom Speed Worm (not sure if original or Ultra Vibe) and Gambler Burner Worm.

2. 10-lber done all wrong!

Speakin' of flippin', here's a guy who ketchez a donkey konk on a frog, then – to my eyes at least – fights it wrong, then land it WAY wrong…but lands it!

Also gotta wonder if this wasn't a setup – musta caught that fish before…?

3. Tom Monsoor has carp attack.

FLWer, stoked he's okay, so gonna poke at him a little:

> Monsoor was helping pull in a cork line net with 750,000 pounds of carp.

> “Five of us were pulling on the cork line real hard. Then we’d release and pull hard again,” said the 64-year-old Monsoor. “All of a sudden, I got this burning in my chest."

Well, uh, Tom…yeah. First problem: carp. Second: 5 guys and 750K lbs in water. Third: Decision-making.

HAHAHAHA! Next time hire these guys:

News

1. Nixon running a Ranger.

Hopefully he's still from Bee Branch.

2. Pros form online webinar deal.

B.A.S.S. and FLW pros plus Jimmy Houston.

Does this line seem to poop on the Bass U or is it my imagination:

> Would you rather put gas in your truck, fight downtown traffic all the way to the outdoor expo, pay to park, walk a half mile while being solicited twice, stand in line, buy a ticket, pay for a flat drink and a stale snack, fight the large crowds, sit behind the tall loud guy on a little rock-hard fold up chair in the back of an over-sized room, all to listen to someone you’ve never heard of before talk about how to tie a palomar knot…?

Well, you don't have to…if you pay $50 a ticket for this new thang.

Wish them well. You're seein' all these pro-backed things cuz many are not makin' ends meet with sponsors and winnin's.

3. ME: No 1-oz or less lead.

Lead sinkers banned in Maine. Law here, clarification here.

Loon-wise, we supposed to assume Maine fishermen use a lot more lead than Minnesota fishermen?

4. WV: Reg changes at Stonewall Jax.

5. CA: Quagga mussels in Piru.

Just a matter of time til they're everywhere…Asian carp coming to a lake near you….

6. TX: Writer Bob Hood needs prayers.

Tip of the Day

KVD: Don't slow down in the cold.

Cuz the basses don't:

> The general thinking…is that fishing would be a lot better during the winter if you have a warm sunny day. However, I’ve found the opposite to be true. …the bass get more active on the nastier days.

> A case in point is when I won the 2010 Bassmaster Classic at Lay Lake. During one of the official practice days, the weather got brutal. The water temp was in the upper 30s, the temperature dropped and the rain turned to snow. A lot of guys had already gone in. It was…difficult to be out there, but I knew I had to find a good school of fish.

> About the time the temperature dropped and the sleet turned to snow, the fish started biting real well.

> I was pretty surprised the fish were as active as they were. When that front moved in a bass literally choked my Red Eye Shad and I knew I was onto something. I caught about 12 to 15 that afternoon including two 7-pounders. I even caught some in 2 feet of water…!

> My point in all of this is that don’t assume bad weather drives bass deep or that you always have to fish slow and methodical.

Quote of the Day

I was by myself that day so there's no way to verify the story.

Elite angler Bill Lowen talkin' 'bout this:

> At the St. Lawrence River, he watched what he thinks would've been the biggest smallmouth he'd ever caught get devoured by a muskie as he tried to bring the smallie back to the boat.

Sure, Bill, sure. Was it this one, and how many chili dogs you have the night before??
