Today’s Top 3

1. Flash Mob Jr. wins again.

That’s two wins in 2 weeks for the YUMbrella Flash Mob Jr.: the Douglas, TN Open, and this weekend’s FLW Tour derby on Beaver Lake, AR. That was Okie Jason Christie’s second FLW win. A few deets:

> His rig featured 3/16-ounce Yum Money Head jigs with whatever swimbaits he could find. He said that the umbrella craze around Rogers had all of the bait shops sold out of swimbaits so he used whatever he could scrounge up. One key on his swimbaits was to have darker colors so they would stand out in the dirty water of the White River.

> “I was focusing on staging areas for those fish to stack up in before the spawn. A lot of the places I fished had a channel swing next to or nearby them and had little knobs that stuck out towards them. I usually fished these areas in about 4-7′.”

Gitcha a Mob Jr. heeya.

2. Craziest fishing website ever?

Speaking of YUM, YUM is all in with zany vids at YumIsFun.com. I like it! Don’t know why those vids are so entertaining but they are. Wish YUM had Z – those’d be some good donkey slaunchin’ ones too.

They’re all good, but I like how this one ends:

[Full disclosure: Yep, YUM is one company that makes it possible for you to enjoy the Blaster, but it’s here because I dig it and think you will too. If I didn’t dig it’d be buried somewhere (lol).]

3. Belated: Guy catches back-to-back 11s on KY Lake.

Dang! Snap! Pow! Great story:

> Steve Nelson’s fishing trip to Kentucky Lake on Easter morning was a trip that will never be forgotten. “I was fishing by myself and was having a pretty good morning. By midday, I had caught five bass that were pushing 4 pounds each with jerkbaits and Tennessee-rigs along a main lake ledge. I noticed that the water was starting to clear up and I decided to change the colors of my baits.”

> When he started fishing that morning, the water was murky and chartreuse colors worked well. When the water started to clear, he changed the color of his 5 1/2-inch swimbaits on his T-rig to white sides with a blue back and the excitement began.

“I was fishing a main lake ledge somewhere north of the Highway 79 Bridge at Paris Landing,” he said.

> “The fish were suspended off the top of the ledge in about 6 feet of water dropping off to 17 feet. I pulled the T-rig over the top of the ledge and a good fish hit.”

> “I knew that it was a good fish, but I couldn’t really tell because it didn’t jump. I almost messed my pants when I saw how big she was (11-01). I was beyond being excited when I realized what I had caught. I just had to sit there for a few minutes to gather myself.”

> “I finally settled down…had made less than 10 casts when I got another bite. I knew that I had caught another top caliber bass when she jumped. It looked bigger that the other bass and I estimated her to be close to 12 pounds (11-03).”

> “I looked up into the sky and thanked my parents. My mother had always given me an Easter gift and I know that she was involved with this. She passed away several years ago and I miss her so much.”

Awesome.

News

1. ND dude wins fish with Ike contest.

> “I guess they will have a full camera crew in the boat. They asked me if I was camera shy. I said I didn’t know, because I’d never been in front of one before.”

> “I called Bassmasters back to ask if it was really true. They said most people don’t get quite as excited as I did. They said some people just want the prizes and money and don’t even want to go on the fishing trip.”

Seriously??

2. Great post on DQ at Douglas and elsewhere.

3. MD creating spawning areas in Gumtree Cove.

4. Largest fish in AZ history caught…

…flathead cat, 76.52 lbs, bit while the guy was asleep in his boat at 2am…on a crankbait!  (Okay…the crankbait part ain’t true.)

Tip of the Day

Homer Humphreys: Why the Beaver kicks tail.

> He favors the Sweet Beaver because the presentation is flawless for a creature bait, one that some liken to a form of tube jig. …it fishes like a tube because it falls with a similar gliding action but imitates a crawfish or, even, a baitfish.

> “There’s no way, no matter if it’s upside down, sideways, that it can mess up. It’s a 100% perfect pitching and flipping bait. It comes out correct every time. That’s my experience guiding and on the tournament trail.”

> He notes that other soft plastics — creature baits and tubes — can get fouled easily with a piece of grass, or hitting a branch the wrong way, thus messing up the presentation.

> “That’s what makes this so good. It’s a 100% presentation bait. The only was it’s not so good is if you miss your target.”

Quote of the Day

When was the last time you hovered over your family like that?

Lee Sisson, talking about spending all kinds of time poring over maps and the Interwebz lookin’ for bassin’ info – and making at least some of us feel guilty (rightly so) for doing it vs. famlee time.
