Cool jig vid, cray named for murder, Shuffield mowin’ lawns

Welcome to Jay Kumar's BassBlaster, your daily-ish email of the best o' bassin'!

Today's Top 5

1. Lookit this jig vid!

Amazing how much silt this jig kicks up:

From the Hook n' Look show by former B.A.S.S. pro Kim Stricker and his son Danny.

2. Crayfish named for murder.

New species found in WV:

> Researchers have named the reddish-orange crustacean Cambarus hatfieldi for the Hatfield family that, according to legend, executed three McCoy brothers near a creek where the crayfish is found.

Wonder how the McCoys feel about that….

3. Shuffield mowin' lawns.

Bassin' legend Ron Shuffield tells Bassin'Fan he's hanging it up…to mow lawns. Nothin' wrong with that, and no wakes to worry 'bout anyhow:

> "I started a lawn service last fall and I'm going to see if I can build and establish that. If it doesn't work, I'll have to go get a full-time job somewhere."

Don't know what it says about our sport, if anything, if one of the most distinguished anglers in the sport retires and has to worry about a full-time job. I know it's not golf, but….

> "Nobody's really interested in a man my age as far as a sponsorship deal. That's understandable – it's a young man's game."

4. More eyebrow-raisin' Shuffield.

From Bassin'Fan on…

Why he didn't like ESPN:
> "There were other things, like you couldn't wear jeans to the weigh-ins anymore and you couldn't wear strap sandals."

B.A.S.S. vs FLW
> "A lot of people, myself included, looked down on it as a lower-class tour. But after awhile, I started to feel that it was better than the B.A.S.S. side as a whole because there were more guys who had the potential to win."
> "B.A.S.S. has 20 or 30 great ones, but FLW has 60 or 70 guys who are subject to win any event."

Tip of the Day

Tips for team bassin'.

> What are the majority of anglers going to do first thing in the morning? Throw a topwater. Nothing wrong with it, but let one person take care of it. To increase your team’s chances of finding a secondary or even an overlooked primary pattern, one of you should make an effort to find a subsurface bite….

> It’s likely you’ll zone in on the most productive depths within a few hours. When this happens…target the same depth but throw the bass a curveball.

> To increase your bite-to-livewell ratio, break out the net during practice. It’s so important you and your tournament partner have a solid netting system in place….

> Whoever is in the back needs to keep an eye on the fish. Every 10 or 15 minutes, take a quick peek at the fish, make sure they’re upright and kickin’, pump some fresh water in and make sure the recirc pumps are running correctly.

> There’s no reason to be uptight, so try to smile and cut up a little bit.

Quote of the Day

When the final FLW Tour sign-up date came and I got the call from FLW welcoming me to the family, I about passed out.

NH's R.C. Cooper talkin' 'bout goin' up the the big leagues. Awesome. Also said:

> I would have to say that some of the most intense competitors I have ever faced come from right here in the Granite State.

Dude, respect to the granite-heads but if that's the case, you ain't seen nothin' yet.
