Bed Fish: Ever Wear Out the Males?

If the male can't do his job, the big gal gets mad!

We’ve been poring over some Okeechobee pattern info here for patterns we recently posted to BassGold.com (bringing the total to over 3,400 btw). Anyhow, noticed the following which I thought was cool.

In the January 2010 FLW Series derby on the Big O, Georgia pro J. Todd Tucker – who finished 4th – said the following, quoted from FLWOutdoors.com:

“I’ve learned in Florida that if you catch the male, the female will leave,” he explained. “Now it may be different in other parts of the country, where when you catch the male the female will set up on the bed after he is gone, but that’s not the case here.”

In order to avoid catching the males, Tucker employed a large 8-inch swimbait to “tease the pair.”

“At first, the male would come after it, but they are usually so small they wear themselves out charging after it,” he described. “Pretty soon the female would get tired of the male not doing its job, and she would set up in the bed to defend it. That’s when I’d drop a tube or Brush Hog in there and catch her.”

Is that cool or what? I mean, even if you’re anti bed-fishing, that’s the ol’ noggin at work.

Bet some of you have done it. If so, where? Does it usually work?

I guess I am not that focused when I bed fish. Because most lakes where I live have 10′-20′ vis, I usually just get a glimpse of the bed, and make a longish underhand pitch to the bed and whatever bites comes aboard for a quick pic, hanging on the scale, and then goes back. I’ll usually cast to the bed again, and if I get bit, wonderful, if not, move on.

PLUS, if I get tired of bed fishing, I will start targeting pre and post spawn bass with X-Raps and lipless cranks in slightly deeper water or transition areas like points leading into a spawning bay

This is unrelated, but who’s going to be first to report on how Nate Wellman was received at the first Elite event that’s currently taking place? He’s in 31st after day one and 9.5 lbs off the lead. Any news Jay?

    Good info, J. Todd.
