Today’s Top 3

1. I made the safer decision to go to the smallmouth school and get a limit before heading to the main spot. The smallmouth weren’t the same. They moved, and although I got a limit, it wasn’t enough to have a chance to win. By the time I got to the second spot, Brandon Palaniuk was already there.

Aaron Martens talking about day 1 at Bull Shoals, which Brandon won. Great column from Aaron thanks breaks down the first part of his season. Other tidbits:

> The lesson I learned in Florida is that sometimes you can catch them, but other people are going to catch them better. I really needed to have more spots figured out and spots other people didn’t find.

> Talking about long-lining on Douglas: Some people were loading their spools with light line and emptying their whole reel before they started the retrieve.

> Trying to land an 8-pounder at T Bend: I actually fell into the water during the excitement of attempting to get a hold of that fish.

2. Jarrett Edwards got a boat deal!

‘Bout time. While back I wrote kinda an open letter to the industry asking why all-around good guy and “solid media buy” Jarrett Edwards didn’t have a boat deal. As a coach of mine used to say, “It makes no logic.” Well, glad to say JO does have a boat deal. He’ll be running one o’ these:

Yep, a Lund Predator. Another tin boat brother! Here’s my favorite shot of that boat – hey, watch your fingers….

Big congrats to Jarrett. Here’s what he said about it:

“I’m super excited about our new long-term partnership with Lund Boats. I grew up honing my angling skills out of a Lund. It still looks and performs as great as the day I picked it up.”

“When TV viewers [see these boats] I think it’s going to open the eyes of a lot of anglers. The Lund 2010 Predator I’m running is an incredible fishing machine that’s simply more versatile than any other rig in the industry.”

3. Half a Senko ‘all the rage?’

Anyone else doing this? From a story about fishing KS’s Perry Lake:

> Each used plastic finesse baits. [They used Senko-type baits] fished in a way that is becoming the rage with bass fishermen: They cut the 5″ baits in half, then used one of the pieces on a light jighead.

News

1. Not many limits in Eastern Divisional.

> Only two limits were brought in today, compared to four yesterday, and the quantity and quality were down overall as well.

Ouch.

2. Mom, teen son win B.A.S.S. Fantasy Fishin’.

> Tinsley said she never expected to come out on top against all the Bassmaster fans angling for first place. “I was just trying to beat my husband,” said Tinsley, whose favorite angler is Mike Iaconelli. “I didn’t know I’d beat everybody else.”

Awesome! And funny….

Tip of the Day

Boyd Duckett: Light line can win tournaments.

From a Q&A with Boyd on Bassmaster.com:

Q [talking about Boyd’s win at Oneida]: If all fluoro is clear, why did 10 pound make a difference? And when did you realize you had to go down to 10 pound? In practice?

Duckett: I learned the first day of the event. Got short strikes on 17 pound, switched to 10 pound and then caught ’em.
