Today’s Top 3

Asking you to please forward this to bassin’ buds or Like it on Facebook. Should be easy to do and it’s the ONLY way the Blaster will grow. Thanks much and have a great weekend.

1. Time for the AL Rig again?

BFL Wild Card was won on Guntersville last weekend with an Alabamian Rig:

> After throwing the frog with little success during practice, Ashley went back to the Alabama rig….

> “I don’t care what anybody says. The Alabama rig is an awesome bait. It triggers the suspended bass into biting, which is an incredibly hard thing to do. The schooling mentality is a heck of a concept.”

He also said the bass were chasing white perch schools over deep grass, which is interesting. Full deets going into the all-powerful BassGold database soon.

2. Future split-ring alternative?

> Miles Smith was fishing the salmon run in the Grand River one day in downtown Grand Rapids, MI a couple years ago and it ended up costing him about $70 in snagged – and lost – fishing lures.

> Out of that was born the idea for the “Break Away Coupling,” a hook-release system that impressed the Start Garden venture capital team enough for them to approve $20,000 in second-stage funding….

> Smith, in his senior year at Grand Valley State University’s Seidman College of Business, was the only one of eight ideas to move beyond the $5,000 investment level this month.

Seriously?

3. Peta wackadoodles want striper memorial.

If this isn’t a sign of the apocalypse, or some urban brain disease, don’t know what is:

> An Irvine resident is requesting that the city install a sign to memorialize the hundreds of fish killed in a traffic crash in early October as they were being taken to Irvine Ranch Market.

> A truck, carrying 1,600 pounds of live fish and several tanks of pure oxygen, crashed with two other vehicles.

> In the letter, Dina Kourda, on behalf of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, asks the city’s street maintenance superintendent to place the sign at the site of the crash on Walnut and Yale avenues.

> The sign would read, “In memory of hundreds of fish who suffered and died at this spot,” to remind tractor-trailer drivers of their responsibility to the animals who are “hauled to their deaths every day,” according to the letter provided by Peta.

News

1. Randy Blaukat may not fish FLW Tour next year.

> As of right now, he’s without a title sponsor for 2013 and if he’s unable to secure a deal in the very near future, he may sit out next season. He sat out 2010 after losing Megabass as his main sponsor.

2. Denali rods looking for pro staff.

3. Timmy Horton behind AL HS derby.

4. Susquehanna River definitely has issues (duh).

> “We know the dissolved phosphorous concentrations are higher than they ought to be. That leads to the low [dissolved oxygen], which causes the fish to be more susceptible to disease.” That disease is columnaris, and it’s easily identified by lesions on infected fish.

> “The bottom line is, we still have a polluted river, and that is the cause of the problem.”

Tip of the Day

Mark Davis: Getting outta slumps.

Good read, couple things:

> More often than not, slumps are caused by a form of complacency. I said you need inner confidence…. What you don’t need is overconfidence or arrogance. It’s easy to get that way after a few top performances. You start to think you have everything figured out and then your performance hits rock bottom. You look around for the problem, never realizing it’s you.

> No matter what the cause of your slump is, however, there’s one thing that’ll get you out of it almost every time: work harder than you ever have before!

> I’m talking about a commitment of time and money. Look at next year’s schedule or at least take a look at the lakes you’ll be fishing. Start by studying every map you can get your hands on. And then travel to them in the off-season and spend long days learning them. This is not about taking a fishing trip. It’s about work.

> When you get home you should be able to answer these questions almost without thinking: Where’s the channel? Where does it turn? Is the water usually clear or stained? What’s the grass and cover situation? What kind of tackle will I need?

Quote of the Day

One trend I see is that the pros seem to be getting younger every year. Despite being young, they are full of information; they’ve put in their time and studied in depth on the Internet. When they go to the lake, it’s not trial and error like it was for us.
