Today's Top 4

1. Was this a 9-08 smallie?

> “The smallmouth bass was caught by my grandfather on July 7, 1914,” he said. “The fish weighed 9 pounds, 8 ounces, and the catch location was Terra Cotta Pond just outside Crystal Lake in McHenry County.” Starritt found a faded label attached to the back of the mounting board.

> The current record is 6 pounds, 7 ounces. Mark Samp caught the current record-holder in a Fulton County strip mine lake in 1985.

No measurements of the head, nothing really to go on…but a crazy Christmas-lookin' mount!

2. Table Rock derby canceled cuz of Feds.

Longest-running derby on the Rock, the 34th annual Homer Sloan Buddy Bass Tournament, fundraiser for the Shell Knob Chamber of Commerce. Army Corps revoked the permits because of the gov't shutdown.

Prolly not the only one.

Anyone else trying to figure out what our gov't is good for…other than overspending and pet projects. Did find a pic of some peeps who are stoked about the D.C. brain trust:

3. Kentucky Lake is slammin'.

Been fortunate to fish lots o' bassin' lakes across this great bassin' country, and have to say Kentucky Lake impressed the heck out of me this week at the Strike King media shindig.

Had the worst conditions possible – cold front, NE winds – but amazingly, fish were still active and got caught. Most places woulda been lockjaw city. Can't wait to go back.

And btw, this place serves a buffet lunch every dang day! Never seen that before in another state park. Awesome chix and dumplin's.

4. Help EE raise money for a sick child.

Edwin Evers is auctioning off his jersey on eBay to help Heston Williams.

> Heston is 3 years old and has Center Core Disease, a form of Muscular Dystrophy. 100% of the proceed raised will go towards purchasing an all terrain outdoors wheelchair for Heston. The chair will enable Heston to hunt, fish and be outdoors with his active family.

> Follow Heston's progress on Facebook under "Heston's Heroes Fundraiser."

Auction ends in less than 24 hours. Go Heston!

Tip of the Day

KVD nuts about trebles.

Great piece by Louie Stout:

> "There are so many variables that anglers overlook. Since I began analyzing and selecting hooks for specific situations, my hooking/landing ratio has improved substantially."

> VanDam is such a believer that he may change the type of hooks he uses on his hard baits throughout the day, depending on the demands of each scenario. He compares it to a NASCAR crew chief setting up a car and making adjustments throughout the race.

> "A hook that flexes tends to pull away from the pressure, bend out and not penetrate as well. It’s something I’ve really noticed while fishing for smallmouth. You catch a 3-pounder with light hooks and the treble will be mangled, even when fishing lighter line and using gentler hooksets.”

> “There’s a common misconception that hooks of bigger diameter don’t penetrate as well. What I’ve found is that slick, black-nickel-finish hooks with a super-sharp point probably penetrate easier than small diameter hooks that flex.”

> That’s why he convinced Mustad to come out with the KVD Elite Treble. It’s got an extra-short shank, wide gap and “Triple Grip” design. The shorter shanks allow him to “upsize” the hook for a bigger bite.

Quote of the Day

Two from a Bassin'master.com slide show:

This year, I stayed with those fish longer and stayed on the bite instead of leaving it.
– Bobby Lane

Without a shadow of a doubt, the key to my being here was having a GoPro camera on my boat. It let the fans see who I am and what I'm about.
– Gerald Swindle

Interestin' about G-man. But…Lane used to leave biting fish??
