If you’re getting the BassBlaster for the first time it’s cuz a bud signed you up!
Today’s Top 4
That’s the biggest lesson I learned at the upper Mississippi River last week. Even though that place is flippin’ heaven, the big year-round deal there is swimjigs cuz of all the vegetation.
For me, a swimjig is a jig with a tail — maybe a chunk, maybe a smaller swimbait. But not those WI/MN peeps. Check this swimjig combo — might be NBD for you upper Midwest bass-heads, but news to others:
That’s hand of Dan Mohan, a local stick who KNOWS that river. Here he is ‘splainin’ thangs on the video tube:
Not for nothin’, the chunkier Big Bite Baits BB Kicker was seriously outfishing the Suicide Shad. Maybe cuz it’s fall and the fish want meat or it just had the right action, who knows. Rest: 3/8-oz Toxic Rod and Tackle swim jig, Denali Kovert rod, high-speed Lew’s Super Duty reel (high speed surprised me, it’s mostly for the current and to keep the jig above the grass) and 50-lb Sunline FX2 braid.
And let’s remember that Ott DeFoe was fishing a bigger swimbait than those fish had ever seen when he won it there. Not a swimjig but….
– Mike McClelland answerin’ my question “Can you fit a 10′ flip stick in this boat?” while we were a-feeshn together last week. After some rough measurements with a wooden leg and some duct tape, we figgered the only way a 10′ pole was getting in a bass boat was if it somehow replaced the passenger/marshal…and maybe that seat.
Good luck with that Elite peeps!
Hit it on Facebook with your answers (PG at most please) and the weener picked by me will win a random box o’ goodies from my “pile o’ tackle the wife hates” in my basement:
- Flip Flop (my fave)
- Dip Stick
- Flip Off
- Power Pole (oops taken)
- Flog Pole
- Dunk Stick (10′, get it?)
- Skeet’s Idea (lol)
While you’re a-thinkin’ about your witticisms, here’s Fat Cat Newton with a 10′ pole of his own — a requirement for fishin’ that new Strike King 50XD he has in his hand:
Love the rotisserie chicken lol
Check this ditch mule ketched by the one and only Zona:
Said it was huge, and he knows smallies, but strangely no measurements….
> “Taping somewhere up in the north. Caught it on a Strike King KVD 300 Deep jerkbait in summer sexy shad. Loomis 853 GLX [the Loomis JWRs are sick!] and Shimano Metanium HG on 12-lb Bass Pro Shops fluoro.
> “Fish was in 12′ with cabbage-rock mix. Water temp was 55. VERY hard rips, like ripping the bait as hard as I can.
> [I asked him about the line size if he’s working the bait that hard for smalls:] “If you go heavier the bait loses its slashing action. If anything I should go to 10.”
Z, as a Tap fan you know you need to go to 11:
Looks like a bass-head outed Z as being with one Seth “I can win anything in MN” Feider on Mille Lacs:
Lookit how insanely crowded that lake is!

3. Tim Horton gets Solar Bat.
Lol. Props to Johnny for not saying THE leader in whatever like everyone else does…when they’re not. But I didn’t understand this:

Secret deal he’s tellin’ you bass-heads about — check it:
Quote of the Day
Trip Weldon was the best fisherman in Alabama.
– Russ tellin’ me ’bout when he started competitive bassin’ in Alabama at age 14. Him and a buddy, age 16, entered a derby and beat Trip (“He was a hammer,” Russ said), making their reps in the state where B.A.S.S. was born.
Wonder if Trip protested them…lol
I know Trip used to fish a ton and was good, but didn’t know he carried that kinda rep. (Hank never did — gotcha Hank!) Trip, I have to think you made more $$ and had a lot less stress fishing around home man!
