Today’s Top 5

Welcome new BassBlaster readers!

1. Biggest smallie ever in a tournament?

Was a question whether the 8.45 smallie recently caught in Lake Michigan was the biggest derby-caught smallmouth ever. A little Sherlock Holmes by Dale Bowman at the Chi-town Sun-Times found that nope, it was this one:

An 8.91 caught by Drew Sokolowski in the Niagara Outdoor Open, Nov. 17, 2012, Lake Erie out of Buffalo, NY.

Dang!

2. Abrasion: fluoro vs mono.

Another cool comparison from the Sunline Facebook page. All of a sudden I’m thinking I should start affordin’ more ‘carbon.

3. Send a limit to OK families.

Cool initiative by The Bass Zone’s Mark Jeffreys:

> Jeffreys has spent over half of his life living in Moore, OK. While his home and office were unaffected by the EF5 tornado that ripped through Moore on May 20, Jeffreys saw the devastation firsthand.

> “These families have lost everything,” said Jeffreys. “The outpouring of support for Moore has been incredible, but there’s still a huge need for certain donations.” Estimates are that 30% of those who lost everything in the tornado did not have any homeowners insurance.

> The “Send A Limit” campaign is simple: Donate five items to The Bass Zone’s HQ by June 30. The biggest need is for nonperishable canned food items, but monetary donations are also accepted.

> Elite Series pros Kenyon Hill of Norman and Edwin Evers of Talala are also helping spread the word and raise donations for the Send A Limit campaign.

> Send your limit of nonperishable canned goods, cash or other items by June 30 to: The Bass Zone/Z3 Media, 3613 Park Glenn Drive, Moore, OK 73160. For cash donations, please make checks payable to: Catholic Charities of Oklahoma.

4. Gman fishes with Clay Dyer.

Cool vid. Clay’s one of my favorite folks in bassin’. Gman is turnin’ out that way too.

5. Cool GoPro speed boat spinout vid.

Lake of the Ozarks has speed boat races?

Tip of the Day

Jared Lintner: Flip/pitch tips.

> “Put your bait anywhere there’s a transition from light to dark. Bass don’t want to sit where they can be seen. They want to sit in ambush.”

> “A lot of guys engage the reel and start working the bait the second it hits the water. Don’t do that! Let the lure fall on a slack line….”

> “You increase your odds of getting a big bass by more than one-half by getting that bait 2 feet under the dock rather than just dropping it on the edge.”

> Lintner’s tools are the G. Loomis 894 FPRGLX flipping rod with a Shimano Chonarch E7. “I like a 7:1 gear ratio because a lot of time that fish is hot and moving, and you have to catch up to him quickly!” His line choices are Sunline FX braid and 25-pound test Sunline Shooter fluorocarbon.

Quote of the Day

As long as it’s growing thick and nasty it’ll hold bass.

Chris Lane talking about his beard grass, which he’ll be fishing in the next Elite on the upper Miss – with Snag Proof’s The Guntersville Frog (brown). That’s a darn good bet according to BassGold!
