World record spot deets, EPA allows more ethanol, Skipping docks tip

If you’re getting the BassBlaster for the first time it’s because a bud signed you up! Thank him by catching a bigger fish than him the next time you head out….

Today’s Top 5

Paul Bailey caught this 11-04 spotted whale feeshn with Irod’s Matt Newman on an unnamed CA lake. Got it on video, not released yet, for some show called Skunked While Fishing….or something like that:

Dang son! Let’s break this-here down:

Cali F&G fail…again

Probly never will be a WR since Cali F&G couldn’t be bothered to get it weighed — guess they don’t care about anything that isn’t a “salmonid,” whatever that is (sounds like a cat treat):

> …the anglers made a call to the state [F&G] to get the bass certified. …wildlife officials were unable to send anyone out to investigate their catch. When the anglers offered to drive the fish to a Fish and Wildlife office, the department said that was impossible. [What does that mean — it’s impossible to drive a fish??]

> After several hours of exploring every option available to them, Newman and Bailey decided to release the bass before it became too stressed.

> If the weight of 11 lbs 4 oz was accurate, Bailey’s bass would have exceeded both the current CA state record and the world record…. California’s record was broken earlier this year with a 10.38-lb fish from New Bullards Bar…. The current world record belongs to a 10.48 from New Melones caught in 2014 by Keith Bryan….

> Earlier this year a tournament angler fishing in Bullards Bar Reservoir left the competition and drove 2 hours before he could weigh his 11-lb 3.2-oz spotted bass. That fish is currently under consideration by IGFA for the world record.

Not sure what Cali F&G does, but this pic was on their Facebook page (lol):

Bait

From Wired2Scout:

> …1/4-oz Picasso Shakedown Shaky Heads with 6-inch Roboworm Fat Straightail Worms in Martens magic. …targeting the backs of deep pockets and would cast shallow and pull the shaky head slowly on the bottom. The bites came towards the anglers so they never really felt the bites.

Oddest line award

Goes to Wired2Scout:

> California and “Kentucky” spotted bass seem to go together now like peas and carrots.

Peas and carrots?? What about turkey and stuffing? Or pizza and football? Or Col. Sanders and chicken? Or since we are talking about bass fishing (right?) — pitching and jigs? Or losing a fish and cussing? Or Zona and Sanders?? Help me out here….

Next day

Here’s what the peas and carrots caught the next day — not a bad couple days of feeshn:

Record OR spotted bass?

Emailed in: Dude named Jake “the Snake” Wall caught this 6.48-lb spotted bass, caught on a Rapala DT-10 (crawdad) in about 6 feet at Cottage Grove Lake, OR.

Could be the OR record, but since OR doesn’t recognize bass as a game species…eyeroll….

Looks like a girl giving you the eye at 20 years old can outweigh a fishing dream.

– Well…yes for most people but not for the truly obsessed (eg, Elitists). That line from a great column on Bassmaster.com. ‘Nother line:

> What I did catch was my old dream, but not like I once thought. I now didn’t need to become the next Jimmy Houston or Roland Martin. I didn’t want to fish for a living, I simply needed to fish to feel alive….

Managed to get an artist rendition of what it looks like when a new guy shows up on the Elite Series:

Not to mention outboard makers:

> EPA finalized the 2014, 2015 and 2016 Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) volume obligations on Monday. While the ruling falls short of the worst-case scenario, it still mandates the breaking of the “blend wall” in 2016….

> Due to this ruling, more ethanol, largely in the form of E15, will be required across the country’s fuel supply. This remains problematic for boat owners and marine businesses as these higher blends of ethanol will damage engines, present grave safety concerns and void warranties.

Grouchy cat say:

Does no one at the EPA own a dang boat??

It’s kind of like your first crush, love at first sight.

– Bass-head who recently appeared on the Food TV show Chopped, talkin’ ’bout watchin’ Larry Nixon on a Bassmaster tournament TV show. Anyone else have a Nixon crush??

Maybe it was Nixon’s short-shorts?

Here’s the bassin’ chef himself:

1. Buy KVD’s Classic-winning bait.

2010 Classic, Lay Lake, KVD wins. One of his winning baits was this Strike King Red Eye Shad:

Now up for auction on eBay to benefit don barone’s Tackle the Storm Foundation. Cool. Up to $355 last time I looked…almost as much as a Japanese swimbait!

2. Howell gets rod glove.

Who said this: “If the glove don’t fit, you must acquit!”

So Bass Pro didn’t toss ’em?

> “Last week we regretfully accepted the resignations of three executives at Fishing Holdings; Randy Hopper, Keith Daffron and Mendel Hughes. These actions were voluntary and do not reflect any changes in philosophy with regard to management.”

This could remind me of an Irwin Jacobs play, but I guess not….

4. T-H Marine buys HydroWave.

Props to both. HydroWave peeps (including KVD and Kriet) hopefully got paid, and sounds like Jeff Huntley and T-H are killin’ it.

Norman Lures facility:

> TNO Fishing closed on the other part of Norman’s dissolution by purchasing Norman’s production facility in Greenwood, including all of its equipment. TNO Fishing is the parent company for Luck-E-Strike, Nemire and Renosky.

> Bobby Dennis, TNO’s VP of business development, said the company plans to expand the plant by 10,000 sq feet and that it will hire 30-50 new employees by this time next year.

> Norman was one of the few lure makers that never moved its production out of the United States.

6. Awesome Future Fisherman Foundation auctions.

Fish with Casey Ashley or Scott “what accent?” Suggs, or have lunch with Forrest Wood.

Tip of the Day

Very few, if any, peeps better than Andy at pitching/flipping/fishing docks. This won’t do what he does justice, but take everything he says literally — read it 3x. If you think you can skip it back there, work on making it go farther. If you think you’re “close enough” to a pole, you ain’t.

> The key is to fish baits as close to poles, floats, or docks as possible

> “I want to pitch as many docks as I can in one day making the optimum casts to as many docks as possible.”

> He’ll turn of the magnets, back off the spool tension, and use his thumb to prevent overruns in the hopes of gaining the much needed casting distance when skipping jigs.

Think about that — that’s really all you need to know. The optimum cast varies a little, but it boils down to way far back, and tight to the structure. His fave baits:

Quote of the Day

Life is the number one cause of death.

– Great line from a don barone article on Mark Davis…who is okay!

Bet some politician would have an issue with that statement….

Your ethanol article misses the point. EPA has about as much discretion over ethanol volumes as a judge has over sentencing for a crime with mandatory minimums. Congress set the ethanol targets in 2007 with the Energy Independence and Security Act, signed by President Bush. The total target volume increases to 36 billion gallons by 2022. EPA has actually defied the law by requiring less ethanol than the targets. The recent revision is because gasoline demand is up.

Don’t like ethanol? Write your congressperson, don’t blame EPA.
