This week’s lunker roll, Pros don’t want to win, Hackney winter jigging

If you’re getting the BassBlaster for the first time it’s because a bud signed you up!

Today’s Top 4

This week’s lunker roll.

A 12.66 from somewhere in TX — caught under a dock in 8 ft:

11.95 from a Dallas/Ft Worth, TX area lake. 25 1/8″ length, 19 3/4″ girth. Caught in 2.5 ft of water on a white swim jig. Water temp was 48, air temp was 55. Caught on west-facing bank, windy.

Multiple Classic qualifier and could fish the Elites but doesn’t want to dude David “the hammer” Kilgore with a 10.5 that he caught on his first cast with a Strike King Bladed Titanium Umbrella Rig.

Elitist Russ Lane with a Coosa River, AL spot that came out of 8 ft to smoke a Spro Fat Papa 55 (honey craw):

Most pros don’t fish to win?

Kevin Short sounds off again on BassBlaster.rocks, this time about info-gathering and use on the top levels. Excerpt:

> [Info is] not really an advantage so much to win a tournament as much as just to ensure that they get a check. At any given FLW or Elite event, I can just about promise you that fully half the field just want to get a check. Most don’t even care if it’s the last one, as long as they get a check. They’re not focused on winning. They’re just focused on getting their money back and they’ll do whatever it takes to get that check.

K-Pink mentions the tune “For the Love of Money” — here’s my fave version, by the Bulletboys. Max ’80s vid, love the Lester Paul at work.

Swimbait happenin’s.

Little roundup from around the webz of inter:

1. Is the old red head/white body color back??

Deps Silent Killer 250 in red head scale, as seen at a tackle show in Japan. Used to be a popular color back in the day, but I never caught a fish with a bait this color…or with a Daredevle spoon either.

2. New Danny Rago Alpha Trout.

3. Trap Bass Baits makes birds.

Ducks too, if that’s your thing.

4. Looooong swimbait seminar with Douglas, Feider, Eric Aske.

Lot of good info, but you need 2 hours, coffee and some nachos to get through it.

Watch this guy rip through an AR swamp.

Tiller steer. Sped up or legit?

News

1. LA: 18-year-old arrested in Dylan Poche case.

2. Bart Schad now running Ranger.

Said in a Jan 29 letter to dealers from Johnny Morris. Bart was the marketing guy, then not, then was, then not, and now ain’t again…he’s just running the place — GM and marketing VP. Congrats man!

Lot of other promotions, believe all internal but one: Tracker guy is plant manager.

3. Seth Feider gets Bassin’ Cat.

Last year ran a Ranger.

4. Bernie Shultz feels like he’s in his 30s.

12. New Elite Series point system.

Not a big change, sounds like it makes sense.

13. FL: Current Okeechobee hot Gambler color.

14. AL: Herring = heavier Smith Lake bass.

Auburn study:

Vid shows the massive difference — now there’s some water.

Tip of the Day

From Bassmaster.com:

> “Water temperatures below 55 degrees can be the best time to catch big fish. You might only get six bites a day, but most will be big ones.”

> On extremely cold days, Hackney has more success with a jig under cloudy skies. “That’s when the fish tend to cling to the bottom during the winter. They often suspend when it’s sunny that time of year, which is often the opposite of summer conditions. When it’s sunny, they’re seeking that warmer comfort zone higher in the water.”

> Clear water is important as well…winter fish need to see the bait because their strike zone is smaller.

> Hackney throws black and blue jigs almost exclusively during winter because, “it’s a confidence thing, and I think dark colors work best when the fish are slowed down by the weather.”

> He prefers the 3/8-oz Strike King Hack Attack Jig with braided line in shallow water, but will go to a 1/2-oz Strike King Structure Jig (that has a smaller hook) with fluorocarbon line when fishing deep. “The lighter jig makes me fish slower, and that’s how the fish want it.”

> Hackney doesn’t hop his jig in the winter — he pulls it, maintaining contact with the bottom and cover at all times.

> “If it’s the right spot, I will fish it for 15 minutes, give it a rest and go back in 15 minutes and hit it again. Work every piece of cover thoroughly. The bigger fish have seen a lot of lures, so they are reluctant to jump on the first thing that comes by.”

Quote of the Day

You ever think about how we call it punching and one of the best colors to use is black and blue?

Innerestin’ observation from FLWer JT Kenney. And I guess when bruises get a little older, they kinda look green-pumpkinish…maybe with some chartreuse.

Shot of the Day

Great shot, don’t get it tho — the ice-fishing thing….

Random

Scientists have found a way to help you learn new skills twice as fast

> “What we found is if you practice a slightly modified version of a task you want to master, you actually learn more and faster than if you just keep practicing the exact same thing multiple times in a row.”

So fishing the same lake over and over and flipping the same docks over and over may not do you as much good as fishing other lakes, I guess?

Be throwin’ these

Only the best…

You gotta get down with this stuff!

Git on these!
