You Ready to Fish the SuperMoon?

Did you see the news this morning – earthquake, tsunami. That’s because of the SuperMoon. And as a basser that means something big could happen to you this week, maybe on the end of your line.

A BassParade reader (thanks Chance!) hipped us to the fact that March 19 will be what’s called a SuperMoon. From accuweather.com:

> The moon will make its closest approach to Earth (called lunar perigee) in 18 years. A new or full moon at 90% or greater of its closest perigee to Earth has been named a SuperMoon by astrologer Richard Nolle. This term has been recently picked up by astronomers.

The last SuperMoon (but not lunar perigee) was in January 2005, right around the time of the 9.0 earthquake in Indonesia. That was a new moon. Today’s quake in Japan was an 8.9, the fifth biggest quake ever recorded, and this moon will be full

So aside from saying a few words to the Big Man about the good folks in Japan, Hawaii and elsewhere in the Pacific – and wherever else crazy stuff will occur – you should a) be drooling about the spawn and b) beware of werewolves.

All sorts of weather/tectonic events and odd human behavior is feared/forecast, but hey, we’re focused on bassin’.

Here’s the best news: the full SuperMoon is March 19…a Saturday! No having to call in sick (for most of us). But just in case you miss it – because of honey-dos, you have a ballet recital, you can’t get to Alabama, Florida, Cali, etc. – the other good news is it’ll also be a SuperMoon (though not as Super) in April:

“An extreme SuperMoon is when the moon is full or new as well as at its 100% greater mean perigee (closest) distance to earth. By this definition, last month’s full moon, this month’s and next month’s will all be extreme SuperMoons.”

Go get ’em boys and girls!

Almost forgot: Wonder what this means for weights on the St. Johns this week.

(P.S. Don’t tell Manabu Kurita.)

As if I need another reason to be bummed that bass season in Minnesota is closed until the end of May. Doh!

If the flooding isn’t too bad (not likely, but hey, we can hope), you can fish in pool 2 of the Miss’ year round (including backwater lakes-with a few exceptions). Myself, I prefer my boat to not look like swiss cheese when I pull it out so I’ll stick to harassing my local crappie population once the ice is out until the opener.

Not saying I won’t make a shore excursion before then though…
